All of us recognize that you have faced challenges with the new mail counter. Would it be possible, in lieu of a counter, to simply have a "flag"--that is, a notification that there are--or are not--unread messages? We are fairly certain that we have sent messages that are unread simply because recipients have not realized that--red banner aside--that unread messages are waiting. It's less important to us that we know the count of unread messages; it's more important that we know that unread messages await.
