TOPIC: Message vs Mail?

I've been off SLS for a few years and just started a new profile. I have sent a "message" to a couple of people with no response. I don't see a "mail" option from within the profile, but I do see one when looking at lists of profiles. So this brings up questions:
Can a person see my "message" even if they aren't on line when I send it? Am I missing the "mail" option from within the profile? I just don't want to waste time trying to communicate in a way that doesn't work. Thanks for any help.
