Taking this out of WTF
Once upon a time, I was in favor of the death penalty, if only for its use to get people to accept a plea. You never know what a jury is going to do, so nice to get the to take the life instead of facing the death penalty at trial. I have now come to the conclusion that I was a fucking moronic in that thinking as the actual guilt or innocence of the person is removed from the decision. We have WAY too many people taking the plea bargain, that we later find out were innocent, because of that black-mail, up and down the justice system. I now think we should eliminate the death penalty, but that is the bare tip of the iceberg of the needed criminal justice system reforms. We need to end cash bail that keeps people locked in jail before trial simply because they are poor. We need to fund public defenders to the same level as prosecutors. We need to think of a sentence for guilt as an opportunity for rehabilitation instead of punishment. We need to end definitive time punishments and instead incarcerate for as long as the person is likely to pose a threat to society.
