TOPIC: Why can free members send Friend requests?

I got one from a free member. I have a free account so used it to test what can be done with it. I sent my mayhem8 account a Friend request from my free account. I cannot send or receive messages at all from the free account.
I went back to my mayhem8 account and approved the Friend request I sent from my free account. Even after approving it, messages sent from to my free account from my paid one don't even register as unread messages on my free account, nevermind that I can't read them from there even with an accepted Friend request. With that in mind, what's the point of allowing free members to send Friend requests?
