Not a new idea. Several economists had proposed Obama side-step debt limits by telling the mint to stamp up a $1 trillion coin. Tliab's math seems off. $2000 per person immediately, and $1000 per month from now until 1 year after this ends. 320 million x $2000 = $640 immediately, then $320 billion for at least 12 months = $3.840 trillion. Call it $4.5 trillion total, so no way is $2 trillion enough. This would be ridiculously inflationary. There is only $2.5T a year circulating in the economy, leaking out and being replaced with new debt/money at $1.5T a year. Suddenly dumping $4.5T in would shock the system into inflation (which I guess could be the point).... well, I guess not if most of that money goes to paying down debt. But still, we explode the monetary base, which, I suppose, could be countered by increasing the reserve requirements on banks. Honestly, monetary base is really pushing on a string now anyway. So, the real problem is... what? Bonus extra credit question class: What is the difference between minting coins and depositing them into the treasury's account, and writing "bond" on a piece of paper which the Fed then buys?
