One of the simplest lessons in life is to learn that the part of a statement that follows the *but* is the only part that really matters...to the one talking.
Take no heed to the hour spent paving the way with flowers, justification, or setting the mood. What follows the *but* is what's meant to be heard above all else. The part before the *but* is generally make-believe, or even an outright lie; but it doesn't have to be. Just understand that it doesn't matter for the conversation you're in. Not even a little. It may be an annoying distraction for some, and I wouldn't want to be that guy - BUT - I wanted a spot where I could quote a few of the *but* statements I tend to hear. Tramp
