We have our phone service through XFinity (Uses Verizon's network). They charge $10/day for usage out of the US, which is a lot for a 2 week trip. This next trip I'm going to try buying a 30 day European SIM card for the phone. Seems pretty straight forward but wondering if anyone has run into any gotcha's with this? I'd do an eSIM card, but my phone doesn't support that.
Other than that, we do use WhatsApp but that doesn't help me if I have no Wifi connection and want to use Google Maps.
