Since I, admittedly recently, joined this site, I've been a bit astounded by the existence of a politics thread and the vitriol people throw at one another in it. Acknowledging that there are real differences of opinion on all of the important issues or newsworthy items of the day, it seems there are enough places for weighty discussions and disagreements.
Without getting into any specific issues or arguments, I'd like to know why people think they post here. What do you get out of it? Ostensibly, we'd all be focused on lighter subjects or those tied to the lifestyle, but the politics thread seems to be the most active. This has no relationship to the specific opinions expressed in the thread, I'm just legitimately curious. Please, no arguments or callouts of specific people. I'm just looking to get a sense of what motivates people.
