I think a lot of people would equate poor spelling, punctuation, and grammar with a lower level of education. I disagree. I think the people with the worst writing skills are simply the most disrespectful. What they are saying is, "Look. I don't feel like proofreading this important missive. YOU do it. I know it may or may not be hard to read, but I'm not going to do any work to make it more intelligible. Instead, I'm forcing YOU to interpret my finger vomit. Fuck you."
That's right. They are saying, "Fuck you," to everyone who is forced to read their hasty communication. Personally, I don't like being told to fuck myself. I'd much rather my job as a reader be made easier by someone who knows how to write and/or how to proofread for errors. And since this site doesn't support any after-the-fact editing features (WTF????), getting it right the first time is even more important. Some people seem to think that writing is out-dated and unimportant in this age of advanced technology. I believe it's the opposite; I think that people now probably write more than ever. In fact, on the internet (and that includes this site), writing is the PRIMARY means of communication. Think about how often you use the phone for verbal communication. The telephone has been almost completely replaced by text messaging, especially amongst the young. (Hell, some of them don't even know what a landline telephone IS.) And while text messaging may not be well-suited to long, thoughtful letters, it still is writing. And don't get me started on how these same people react when you tell them that what they've written is hard to read. "Oh, come on! You know what I meant." No. No, I don't. Labeling the electronic turds that somehow squeezed from your fingers to the screen I'm looking at as "writing" throws an absolutely black shadow across all the great writers that have come before you. YOU should be ashamed, not proud of yourself. And before you accuse me of being some highfalutin', Ivy League grammar nazi, I'll advise that I graduated public high school with a 3.1 GPA and never went to college. I simply give a damn about how much work I'm asking you to do when you read what I want to say. Commence with the ill-conceived and anger-filled responses. And fuck you.
