Last time I mentioned cars it kind of took over the topic, so figured it could use its own.
The Mrs car (Lincoln MKX) died with a bad alternator. With 177K miles, that happens. The part is around $300, which is about the same as my Cadillac. So far OK, even though that's about 10x what they cost as a kid. Then in talking to the mechanic, he has to recharge my A/C because the only way to get the alternator out is to remove the A/C compressor. I'm not sure that would be any different than my Caddy, but talk about sucky design. As a kid I could swap out my alternator with basic tools in the driveway in about an hour. A large part of this was the transition from predominantly rear wheel drive to front wheel drive cars, where the engine sits in the engine bay sideways. Still, it sucks royally for both the owner and the mechanics working on todays cars that ease of repair is such an afterthought. Thoughts?
