Elkhart police received a call about a gunman at Martin's Super Market about 10 p.m. Wednesday, Indiana State Police Sgt. Trent Smith said Thursday.; The 22-year-old man used a semi-automatic handgun to shoot and kill a 20-year-old employee and a 44-year-old shopper, Smith said. The victims' bodies were found about 12 aisles apart. Indiana State Police identified the gunman as Shawn Walter Bair of Elkhart.; Smith said two police officers responding to the scene heard a gunshot as they entered the near-empty store. They dashed to that area and found the shooter pointing his gun at a third person. Smith said the man then aimed his gun at the officers and that's when they shot him dead.; Smith applauded the officers' swift response, saying there was no doubt they saved lives.; A large knife was found near the gunman's body, he said.; No further details about the victims have been released, but Smith said there was no indication that the shooter knew the victims.; "At this time, it appears that it's just random," he said. He did not elaborate.; State police were investigating the incident because the Elkhart Police Department was involved in the shooting, Smith said.; "We do have a lot of things to look at as far as video surveillance," Smith said, noting that state and city police were also interviewing witnesses.; Martin's Super Market said the Elkhart store would remain closed Thursday.; "The entire Martin's family is saddened by this tragedy," company president and CEO Rob Bartels said in a news release.; "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families involved and the entire community," Bartels said.; Elkhart is in far northern Indiana, just south of the Indiana-Michigan border, and about 15 miles east of South Bend.; ; I'm waiting for the day when one of the SLS gun lovers goes postal and kills a bunch of people. Punters and kickers likely don't get to open much fan mail. But after getting absolutely demolished by Pittsburgh's Terence Garvin last Sunday night, Bengals punter Kevin Huber received some well wishes from one young fan in Cincinnati.; Proclaiming himself as Huber's No. 1 fan, 7-year-old Nicholas Andrew Johnson penned a hand-written note to the injured punter, who will miss the remainder of the season with the broken jaw and cracked vertebrae he suffered as a result of the hit. Johnson wished Huber, who also kicked at the University of Cincinnati, a speedy recovery, and had some harsh words for Garvin, whom the NFL said should have been penalized on the play.; Check out the letter below, which was originally tweeted out by Johnson's father and later picked up WKRC in Cincinnati.; <em>Dear Kevin,</em>; <em>I hope you feel better soon. I am mad at the Steelers because you are my #1 player. I am 7 years old and love the Bengals and Bearcats. I know you played for the Bearcats and Bengals and I love the teams. <strong>(CNN)</strong>-- To the families of the victims, Ethan Couch was a killer on the road, a drunken teenage driver who caused a crash that left four people dead.; To the defense, the youth is himself a victim -- of "affluenza," according to one psychologist -- the product of wealthy, privileged parents who never set limits for the boy.; To a judge, who sentenced Couch to 10 years' probation but no jail time, he's a defendant in need of treatment.; The decision disappointed prosecutors and stunned victims' family members, who say they feel that Couch got off too easy. Prosecutors had asked for the maximum of 20 years behind bars.; "Let's face it. ... There needs to be some justice here," Eric Boyles, who lost his wife and daughter, told CNN's "Anderson Cooper 360" on Wednesday night.; "For 25 weeks, I've been going through a healing process. And so when the verdict came out, I mean, my immediate reaction is -- I'm back to week 1. We have accomplished nothing here. My healing process is out the window," he said.; Lawyers for Couch, 16, had argued that the teen's parents should share part of the blame for the crash because they never set limits for the boy and gave him everything he wanted.; According toCNN affiliate WFAA, a psychologist called by the defense described Couch as a product of "affluenza."; He reportedly testified that the teen's family felt wealth bought privilege, and that Couch's life could be turned around with one to two years of treatment and no contact with his parents.; ;

It must be in their DNA; Montreal has been snubbed in new round of Canadian awards but few will be offended that it didn’t haul home any hardware from the first-ever Boring Awards.; The awards, handed out in Toronto Tuesday, have ruffled the pride of other Canadian cities, however.; Few were shocked when Stephen Harper was named Most Boring Canadian, as he proved duller than fellow contestants Avril Lavigne, Thomas Mulcair, Justin Bieber, VaBeachcoupleand the animated Royal Bank character.; Canada’s most boring event was declared to be the 64th Annual Tax Conference, Calgary Alberta, which edged out a couple of royal-related affairs and the the Maple Leafs' playoff elimination.; Embattled Toronto Mayor Rob Ford beat out Ryan Gosling as Least Boring Canadian.; The real controversy lay in the naming of Canada’s most boring city, which was won by Ottawa, with Abbotsford, B.C., Lethbridge, Alberta, Brampton, Ontario and Laval, Quebec also nominated.; The nominations were big news in Lethbridge and Abbotsford, where several media organizations reported on their inglorious consideration.; Boring Awards representative Albert Nerenberg explained how those cities were singled out.; “The process was not rigidly scientific. We open-nominated on Facebook, Twitter and on the web and about 17 cities were nominated. We narrowed the field down to five. Then we looked at substantiation. For example all the cities on the boring list are legendary in terms of boredom. There's a film being made in Ottawa called<em>The City that Fun Forgot</em>. Abbotsford is defined in the Urban Dictionary as boredom. But Ottawa clinched mainly because the government there brags about how boring it is. As well, Ottawa must have a greater marketing and entertainment budget than any other city so it's boringness is less excusable.”; The awards were inspired by Nerenberg’s<em>Boredom</em>documentary,; ;

He will be booked at the county's correctional facility, the sheriff's office said.; This is one of several brushes that Zimmerman has had with law enforcement since he was acquitted this year of murder and manslaughter in the 2012 shooting death of teenager Trayvon Martin.; Earlier this month, police in Lake Mary, Florida, said no charges will result from an alleged domestic dispute in September between George Zimmerman and his estranged<span style="line-height:1.6em">wife, Shellie Zimmerman.</span>; Shellie Zimmermansaid in Septemberthat she has doubts about his innocence in the Trayvon Martin case.; Since his acquittal in the Martin case, Zimmerman also has been stopped for speeding twice. Fire department sends huge bill after house burns down

Two weeks after a man's Arizona home burned down, he received a bill of almost $20,000 to pay for the help his family received from the private fire department.; <span style="line-height:1.6em">Fox Phoenix reported that Justin Purcell and his wife were not home when the fire started and the Rural Metro Fire Department showed up to fight it. The firefighters were not able to salvage the house, which burned to the ground, and Purcell received a $19,825 bill two weeks later.</span>; <span style="line-height:1.6em">"Everything was completely gone," Purcell told Fox. “It’s definitely a shocker when you come back and your house is gone." Purcell lived in the town of Surprise.</span>; <span style="line-height:1.6em">The homeowner and his wife were even more surprised when they received the hefty bill two weeks later. Purcell said the fire department's expenses were broken down on the bill, including $1,500 for each truck.</span>; <span style="line-height:1.6em">Purcell had insurance on his home, but the policy didn't cover the fire bill.</span>; <span style="line-height:1.6em">Colin Williams, a spokesman for Rural Metro, told Fox that "those numbers are set based on 65 years on tradition buying equipment, training, operating a fire service." He added that the rates are fair considering the fact that Purcell lived in an area of Arizona that has no fire coverage.</span>; <span style="line-height:1.6em">Rural Metro offers payment plans for those who can’t afford to pay large bills right away, but it does not give people the option to let their house burn.</span>; Arizona. Suit: NY dad criticized for denying son McDonald's
FORUMS > General Discussions > Open Forum > Suit: NY dad criticized for denying son McDonald's       11-08-2013 15:34 PM
NEW YORK (AP) - Saying no to a toddler's demands for a McDonald's Corp. meal got a father branded an inept parent, he says in a lawsuit claiming a psychologist urged a judge to curtail his parental visits over the dinner debacle.; David E. Schorr says psychologist Marilyn Schiller pronounced him incapable of caring for his nearly 5-year-old son after he offered a choice — dinner anywhere but McDonald's, or no dinner at all — and let the boy choose the latter. He then took his irate son home to the boy's mother's house early from their Oct 30 dinner date, according to a defamation suit Schorr filed Tuesday.; Schiller didn't immediately return a call Friday.; Schorr, an attorney and employee-benefits consultant, is in the midst of a contentious divorce with estranged wife Bari Yunis Schorr. Schiller was court-assigned to evaluate the couple and their child, according to the lawsuit.; Schiller's reports and other filings in the divorce case aren't public; court records indicate only that there have been a flurry of filings over two years. Bari Schorr's lawyer, Louis I. Newman, declined to comment.; While the case plays out, David Schorr has alternate weekends and dinner every Tuesday with his son, according to the defamation suit.; "Normally not a very strict father who rarely refuses his child McDonald's," Schorr put his foot down Oct. 30 "because his son had been eating too much junk food," the suit said. Schorr himself didn't immediately return a call Friday.; He quickly regretted his stance when his son threw a tantrum, but he felt that giving in would reward bad behavior, so he offered the elsewhere-or-nowhere "final offer," as his court papers put it.; "The child, stubborn as a mule, chose the 'no dinner' option," the suit says. And the father promptly carted the boy back to Bari Schorr's building, still trying to entice the child into changing his mind as they waited in the lobby for her to get home from work, according to the suit.; Schiller told a judge the fast food flap "raises concerns about the viability" of the father's weekend visits with his son and asked a judge to eliminate or limit them, his lawsuit says.;

Embattled Toronto Mayor Rob Ford is "considering" rehab, a lawyer for the politician said Friday, but, he added, "It's best we hear from his lips."; The development comes a day after a new video showing Ford threatening to kill someone was published, and just three days after the politician in charge of North America's fourth-largest city admitted he had smoked crack cocaine.; Dennis Morris, Ford's lawyer, told The Associated Press that Ford is "considering his options," including treatment. He said that Thursday was a defining day for the mayor.; The clip that was released on Thursday was the second one to tarnish Ford's reputation.; "He dies or I die," Ford says in it, adding: "I need f***ing 10 minutes to make sure he's dead. It'll be over in five minutes."; The context of the video is unknown and it's unclear who Ford is threatening in his rambling rant.; In the blurry, shaky video, Ford paces around, frantically waves his arms and rolls up his sleeves as he says he'll "make sure" the unknown person is dead.; "When he’s down, I’ll rip his f***ing throat out. I’ll poke his eyes out," an agitated Ford can be heard saying.; Moments afterThe Toronto Star published the 80-second videoon its website, Ford made yet another a public apology.; “The Toronto Star just released a video that I was very, very inebriated,” he said. “All I can say is, again, I've made mistakes. I just wanted to come out and tell you I saw a video. It’s extremely embarrassing. The whole world’s going to see it."; <ul> </ul> Ford added: “I hope none of you have ever or will ever be in that state. Obviously, I was extremely, extremely inebriated.”; Thursday's apology was the second one this week for Ford. Headmitted on Sunday he had a drinking problem, acknowledging he was "hammered" in public at a street festival in August and "out of control" drunk around city hall after St. Patrick's Day last year.; On Tuesday, the father of twoadmitted that he had smoked crack cocainewhile "in one of my drunken stupors," butsaid he would not resign.; "I know I embarrassed everyone in the city and I will be forever sorry," Ford said Tuesday.; Ford's family is standing by him.; His sister, Kathy Ford, told the Canadian TV stationCP24that her brother doesn't have a drinking problem unless"you want to consider binge drinking once every three months" a problem. "Robbie does not drink every night," she said.; His mother, Diane Ford, said her son's big issue is food — not drugs.; “He’s got a huge weight problem and I think that is the first thing he has to attack because that will change your whole demeanor,” she said.; ; Fuckin' halarious, eh....;

A Florida woman serving 20 years in prison for firing a shot into the wall during a fight with her husband will get a new trial in March and can argue next week to be released on bail, a judge ruled Thursday. The plight of the woman, Marissa Alexander, drew national attention because of perceived parallels to the shooting of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman, who claimed self-defense and was acquitted in July of second-degree murder. Alexander claimed that she feared for her life on Aug. 1, 2010, during a fight with her estranged husband, Rico Gray, who was under a restraining order. She testified that she fled into a garage and got a gun but couldn’t leave the house because the garage door was stuck. She testified that she went back into the house and fired the shot. Gray testified that Alexander was the aggressor and pointed the gun at him before she fired. She was convicted of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and the trial judge said he was bound by state law to give her 20 years. In September, a state appeals court ordered a new trial. The appeals court said that the trial judge gave the jury incorrect instructions on self-defense. It said, however, that the judge was correct to block Alexander from invoking the Florida law known as Stand Your Ground, which generally removes a person’s duty to retreat when he or she is confronted with perceived deadly force. State prosecutors said, and the trial judge agreed, that Alexander acted in anger, and showed by going back inside the house that she was not afraid for her life. Alexander’s bail hearing was set for Nov. 8, and her retrial for March 31. Alexander’s supporters want state prosecutors to drop the case. Prosecutors have said that Alexander aimed the gun at the man and his two sons, and that the bullet she fired could have ricocheted and hit any of them. Prosecutors said Thursday that they would oppose bail. “The State Attorney’s Office has no intention of dropping the very serious charges against the defendant,” Jackelyn Bernard, a spokeswoman for the state prosecutor handling the case, said in a statement. “The SAO will continue to pursue justice for our two child victims and their father who were endangered by the shot the defendant fired at them.” A lawyer for Alexander did not immediately answer a request for comment. What a travesty. That's Florida laws for you...

FARGO, N.D. — A North Dakota woman said she’s not planning on handing out candy to children she believes are “moderately obese.” Instead she’s giving them letters. The woman’s plan to take childhood obesity in her own hands is sparking much controversy after she called into a Fargo, N.D. radio station early Tuesday morning. "I just want to send a message to the parents of kids that are really overweight," a woman only known as Cheryl said. "I think it's just really irresponsible of parents to send them out looking for free candy just because all the other kids are doing it.""I'm contributing to their health problems, and really, their kids are everybody's kids.” The letter, in part says, “Your child is, in my opinion, moderately obese and should not be consuming sugar and treats to the extent of some children this Halloween season.”

A kidney for $10,000? Paying donors actually pays off, new study finds. Paying living kidney donors $10,000 to give up their organs would save money over the current system based solely on altruism — even if it only boosts donations by a conservative 5 percent. That’s according to a new analysis by Canadian researchers that rekindles the ongoing debate about whether it’s practical — and ethical — to offer financial incentives for human body parts. “We have a problem. We don’t have enough organ donors coming forward,” said Dr. Braden Manns, an associate professor and clinical professor in nephrology at the University of Calgary. He led the new study published Thursday in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology. “We need to figure out a way to solve that problem. We shouldn’t throw out, out of hand, solutions that could increase donations.” But other kidney experts say that even if it’s cost-effective to pay people for organs, the moral issues the practice generates might backfire. “Sometimes these things have unintended consequences,” said Dr. Stephen Pastan, a board member for the National Kidney Foundation and a transplant surgeon at Emory University in Atlanta. “If we paid $10,000, a lot of altruistic donors would say that it’s just a cash transaction. Donations could go down.” Right now the question is theoretical. In the U.S., Canada and other countries — except Iran — paying people to donate organs is illegal. So, if the money was right, would you sell one of your organs?

Since you are self-employed, why don't you move back to Canada where health care is free? You wouldn't have to pay for health care and still can run your business from there, right? Slavery alive and well in more places than you think

LONDON — Some 30 million people are enslaved worldwide, trafficked into brothels, forced into manual labor, victims of debt bondage or even born into servitude, a global index on modern slavery showed on Thursday. Almost half are in India, where slavery ranges from bonded labor in quarries and kilns to commercial sex exploitation, although the scourge exists in all 162 countries surveyed by Walk Free, an Australian-based rights group. Its estimate of 29.8 million slaves worldwide is higher than other attempts to quantify modern slavery. The International Labor Organisation estimates that almost 21 million people are victims of forced labor. "Today some people are still being born into hereditary slavery, a staggering but harsh reality, particularly in parts of West Africa and South Asia," the report said. "Other victims are captured or kidnapped before being sold or kept for exploitation, whether through 'marriage', unpaid labor on fishing boats, or as domestic workers. Others are tricked and lured into situations they cannot escape, with false promises of a good job or an education." The Global Slavery Index 2013 defines slavery as the possession or control of people to deny freedom and exploit them for profit or sex, usually through violence, coercion or deception. The definition includes indentured servitude, forced marriage and the abduction of children to serve in wars. According to the index, 10 countries alone account for three quarters of the world's slaves. After India, China has the most with 2.9 million, followed by Pakistan (2.1 million), Nigeria (701,000), Ethiopia (651,000), Russia (516,000), Thailand (473,000), Democratic Republic of Congo (462,000), Myanmar (384,000) and Bangladesh (343,000). The index also ranks nations by prevalence of slavery per head of population. By this measure, Mauritania is worst, with almost 4 percent of its 3.8 million people enslaved. Estimates by other organisations put the level at up to 20 percent. Chattel slavery is common in Mauritania, meaning that slave status is passed down through generations. "Owners" buy, sell, rent out or give away their slaves as gifts. After Mauritania, slavery is most prevalent by population in Haiti, where a system of child labour known as "restavek" encourages poor families to send their children to wealthier acquaintances, where many end up exploited and abused. Pakistan, India, Nepal, Moldova, Benin, Ivory Coast, Gambia and Gabon have the next highest prevalence rates. At the other end of the scale, Iceland has the lowest estimated prevalence with fewer than 100 slaves. Next best are Ireland, Britain, New Zealand, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Luxembourg, Finland and Denmark, although researchers said slave numbers in such wealthy countries were higher than previously thought. "They've been allocating resources against this crime according to the tiny handful of cases that they've been aware of," said Kevin Bales, lead researcher and a professor at the Wilberforce Institute for the Study of Slavery and Emancipation at Hull University. "Our estimates are telling them that the numbers of people in slavery - whether it's in Great Britain or Finland or wherever - in these richer countries actually tends to be about six to 10 times higher than they think it is." Walk Free CEO Nick Grono said the annual index would serve as an important baseline for governments and activists in the anti-slavery fight. "This kind of data hasn't been out there before," he said. "It's a multi-year effort, and next year we'll have a much better picture of where slavery is and what changes there are. If you can't measure it, you can't devise policy to address it."

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said Wednesday that the budget standoff in Washington and partisan bickering have eroded the confidence of the American people and damaged the credibility of the U.S. Congress. In an interview with NBC News' Brian Williams, McCain said some House members' determination to repeal or defund President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act during a government shutdown was “a fool’s errand.” "We inflicted pain on the American people that was totally unnecessary. We cannot do this again," McCain said. "We, Republicans, have a hole that we've got to come out of and obviously we're going to have to do a lot of work." McCain, who himself opposes the president's health law, said that stubbornly pursuing the plan to destroy Obamacare during a government shutdown was an impossible task. "So, you deceived a lot of Americans and that adds to the cynicism," he said.
Women GOP senators on debt deal: 'Let's get to it'
FORUMS > General Discussions > Politics > Women GOP senators on debt deal: 'Let's get to it'       10-16-2013 11:46 AM
Three women senators who helped craft a deal being pushed by Senate leaders to resolve the nation's debt crisis said House lawmakers need to rise above politics to quickly pass a deal that will allow the federal government to open its doors and pay its bills. “This should not be about someone’s speakership. This should not be about the next election. This should be about the future of our country, where we are right now. We are shutdown as a government. We are facing a debt crisis,” Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska told TODAY’s Savannah Guthrie. Murkowski, along with fellow Republican Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire, crafted the compromise plan with the help of a bipartisan group of other women lawmakers. Record number of women senators set tone: 'They're able to talk to each other' The deal, however, was rejected by the House and Speaker John Boehner is being criticized for his struggle to keep his members, particularly a small group of the Tea Party conservatives, in line. Murkowski said the deal at issue is about more than Boehner’s political future. “We need to keep in mind what the real goal here is, which is getting this country back on track. Difficult decisions for all but it ought not to be about the politics of the game or whether or not someone keeps their leadership,” she said. “I want to support John Boehner in any way that I can but we need to be pragmatic. This is not going to be a Republican solution or a Democratic solution. This is going to be a solution that is good for the country.” Faced against a deadline just a day away, House leaders are scrambling to craft competing legislation, one that would help dismantle elements of the Affordable Care Act, which Republicans refer to as “Obamacare.” Ayotte said it’s time to move past that issue because battle over the health care law already took place, with its detractors losing the fight. “Let’s face it, the government is shutdown, the Obama care exchange is open,” she told Guthrie. Using health care as a hurdle to resolving the nation’s budget and debt crisis is part of a “zero-sum policy.” “What we need is problem solving that why I’m proud to be here with Susan (Collins) and Lisa to get this resolved for the country,” Ayotte said. Collins, who spearheaded the plan being used as the basis of the Senate’s proposed deal, hailed the effort by the group that crafted the legislation. “I would describe ourselves as a bipartisan group that’s trying to get a solution and do what the American people want us to do, which is to govern responsibly," she said. "We put together a bipartisan group, I think it’s significant it’s led by women, but even more significant is the fact that it’s six Republicans, six Democrats and we’ve come to an agreement.” Murkowski agreed. “We think in the Senate, the six of us — actually, seven women that have been working together — do have a good bipartisan solution that works,” she said. “Let’s get to it.” If they can do it, what's wrong with the rest of them?

Wal-Mart (WMT -0.19%) stores in Springhill and Mansfield, La., saw a stampede and a shelf-clearing rush Saturday after a computer glitch for food stamp recipients led to benefit cards allowing unlimited purchases. Police were called as entire shelves were being cleared out, until the glitch was fixed and low-income residents using the cards were no longer allowed to make purchases. "Springhill Police Chief Will Lynd confirms they were called in to help the employees at Wal-Mart because there were so many people clearing off the shelves. He says Wal-Mart was so packed, 'it was worse than any black Friday' that he's ever seen. Lynd explained the cards weren't showing limits and they called corporate Wal-Mart, whose spokesman said to let the people use the cards anyway. From 7 to 9 p.m., people were loading up their carts, but when the cards began showing limits again around 9, one woman was detained because she rang up a bill of $700 and only had .49 on her card. She was held by police until corporate Wal-Mart said they wouldn't press charges if she left the food. Lynd says at 9 p.m., when the cards came back online and it was announced over the loud speaker, people just left their carts full of food in the aisles and left." No arrests were made. "Just about everything is gone. I've never seen it in that condition," Mansfield Wal-Mart customer Anthony Fuller told KSLA.

What's Affected by a Government Shutdown? Vital services that ensure seniors and young children have access to healthy food and meals may not have sufficient Federal funds to serve all beneficiaries in an extended lapse. Call centers, hotlines and regional offices that help veterans understand their benefits will close to the public. Veterans’ compensation, pension, education, and other benefits could be cut off in the case of an extended shutdown. Every one of America’s national parks and monuments, from Yosemite to the Smithsonian to the Statue of Liberty, will be immediately closed. New applications for small business loans and loan guarantees will be immediately halted. Research into life-threatening diseases and other areas will stop, and new patients won’t be accepted into clinical trials at the National Institutes of Health. Work to protect consumers, ranging from child product safety to financial security to the safety of hazardous waste facilities, will cease. The EPA will halt non-essential inspections of chemical facilities and drinking water systems. Permits and reviews for planned energy and transportations projects will stop, preventing companies from working on these projects. Loans to rural communities will be halted. Hundreds of thousands of Federal employees including many charged with protecting us from terrorist threats, defending our borders, inspecting our food, and keeping our skies safe will work without pay until the shutdown ends. Hundreds of thousands of additional federal workers will be immediately and indefinitely furloughed without pay.
