We'll be in Amsterdam for a couple of days in early June this year. Rather than continue the conversation in the Covid thread, figured I'd make a topic where it better belongs.
Just looking for general input as well as any specific things to see or avoid. Not having ever been, we did want to see the Red Light District (RLD) and will be staying within walking distance of it. Already got the warning from a couple people to watch out for pick pockets. Heard the RLD was a tourist trap, but not having been, we at least want to see it once. Could be a one-and-done, but won't know until we experience it. We were considering tickets to Moulin Rouge, but then someone mentioned "don't get sucked into the sex shows". The tickets we saw were $50 euros each and included 4 drinks. We're not really expecting to find people to play with, but would be up for it if the opportunity comes up. Neither of us however are interested in prostitutes. Already saw lots of warnings to not be walking around that area taking pictures/video. From what I've heard. As far as I can tell, the better sex clubs are a ways away from the RLD. People did seem to have good things to say about a visit to PROUD (Dutch Union for Sex workers). Seemed to be more for info and apparently they have a good coffee shop. Again, within walking distance of where we're staying and may do that before we venture into the RLD. I'm not into 420, but the Mrs wants to check out some coffee shops. We were warned not to buy pot outside of a shop, as the risks aren't worth the rewards. We'll be staying right next door to the Sex Museum, so may hit that for something to do during the day. Was also consider a canal tour, but we may be able to cover that area better with a bicycle tour, or just renting bikes. Will probably pack one of our bicycle cell phone holders so we can have Waze up if we do that. Whatever we do, the plan is to head back to the hotel around 3 pm and take a nap so that we can be up and about to see the night life. Any other thoughts or ideas appreciated. FWIW - This is the start of a 15 day Viking River cruise, and we decided we wanted to do an extra day in Amsterdam. We'll have a Fri and Sat there.
