Yes they do. Even the caller ID on our phone works.

In today's world cellular phones can work from almost anywhere. You do need to check with your provider to set up service, but that might not be your best option. We usually just accept texts when we are out of the country that way it only costs about .50 per text. A better option if you have wifi connection is to use Skype. You can use your computer as your phone. One word of warning, if you have a smart phone make sure you disconnect your data. We keep ours on flight mode if we are using it for music or whatever and have texts sent to our dumb phone. If you don't do that your next bill will have a big surprise. It will have roaming fees for data down loads every 15 minutes, even if you are not using it to surf the net! A friend of ours racked up a $150 bill just by turning on the phone on occasionally to check for texts in Jamaica. Another option you might want to consider is buying a local phone. As I recall they are only about $20 in Jamaica including lots of minutes. If you can't really go on vacation and need to be in constant communication that is probably the best option. Not sure what might be available in Dominican but I'm sure you could easily find out on a travel board that has a message board about your resort or location. If not there will probably be ads for them in the airport when you arrive.

You need to call your service provider, they can help you with that, sometimes they can even make sure you don't lose service if you tell them what areas you will be in that week. usually for an extra charge if it's out of their service area.
