Yes - we have been to Canary Islands about 10 years ago and back then there were direct flights from NYC. However today you would need to change planes in Madrid, or Barcelona or Malaga. Canary Islands are European version of Caribbean But you will not see poverty like on some Caribbean islands. Canary Islands are archipelago of few island but each one is so different from the other. We loved there as weather is always like hot late spring day - around 80 F all the time . Great coffee shops, great food, very nice and friendly people. All beaches are topless and some allows nudity as well. Beaches can be black, white or pink - as each island is so different. Lanzarotte is black deserted island with great hotels and so much open space, Grand Canaria has white and pink beaches, La Gomera is fully tropical island and just look like Costa Rica as vegetation goes. Our favorite island is Teneriefe and this is where international airport is located - beaches are black. We were there in January and temp was 78 F nonstop. It is very unique island as you can swim or sunbathe by the palms then drive up to volcano and see snow in a two hr Spanish. This is an island where part of Star Wars movie was shoot due to being so unique. Island has a great nightlife but in a sense is kind of segregated to who is where - British in one region, Germans in another, French someplace else and there is also so many Swedish, Norvegians, as well Russians and Ukrainians. All Islands are very safe as well very clean and no powerty at all like on some Caribbean islands. Well there is so much mure to say about them so if you need more to know write us back. For sure we would love to go back as we truly had a great time. Now we are planning to see another archipelago - Azores as they also shall be great to visit. B and O
