We just spent 7 days in the Yucatan Penn, granted we were on a cruise ship, but we never felt threatened at any port of call.
Actually, we thought, Cozumel was the safest port we visited.
That, and we only live 10 miles from the Mexican border.

Mexico is a BIG country, there are tourist areas which are safe for Americans, including Los Cabos and Cancun. Posting such inflamatory, personal opinions undermine hard working Mexicans who are tryiing to make an honest living, play in to the hands of the criminals.

Up until a couple of weeks ago the City of Veracruz was considered a safe place, from the extreme violence Mexico is experiencing. The Casino Royal was hit on for protection money by one of the drug cartels. Thinking the drug cartel had no influence the owners did not pay up. The place was fire bombed and shot up. From videos and pictures taken by normal people; it is clear the local police had been paid off to not intervene and were actually looking out for the attackers. About 50+ people lost their lives. Senior Frogs which is a very popular tourist bar on the Gulf of Calif Coast has been forced to close due to the same type of demands and fear of the same type of attack. The US Military all ready prohibits any military personnel from going into any part of Mexico, due to the danger. There are so called "truces" among the drug cartels to leave certain areas alone. Those areas where tourists are popular with. But with the closing of Senior Frogs it is clear those truces are breaking down. My advice to anyone is to: Do not travel into any part of Mexico as you could be caught in a terrible, if not lethal situation. And because of Mexico's very strict gun controls you have no chance to defend yourself; should you be caught is a situation where criminals have mass murder on their minds.
