Melvin,

It is unlikely that this is a server problem. It is very likely that it's a software problem, that is, the software that makes the approval process work.

It's easy and inexpensive to change hardware. In fact, you could get your data hosted in the cloud by any number of companies. Whether you'd want to do that is another matter. But it's not easy or inexpensive to write the routines that handle the data.

It's not rocket science, but it's complex enough.

Tell you what, though, if we all paid $149 every three months, like they do on the AFF web sites, we could have great software that does everything we want and never fails. Oh, wait, the AFF sites' software sucks too. Never mind.

There are a lot of other lifestyle web sites. We're sure one will suit your needs. Unless one has a limitless supply of cash to create a start up web site, it isn't going to happen. Personally, we find this is the best one out there for us, even with it's little quirks and glitches.

Given that when you click on "city-to-city" map you get a Google map, I'd guess Google is the source of the data.

Since we users only provide our zip codes for locations, to get exact mileage, whatever software it is will have to make some assumptions. Some years ago, the software was using the post office location for the zip code, but Google may know your location (or think it does) because of the device you're using or what you've told Google in the past. Much of the time, our location is wildly inaccurate within the zip code, but we don't help Google out much.

FWIW, the distances and travel times are fairly accurate given the start and end points that Google seems to use.

They usually say "X Miles" and then "Y Miles by car."

The X miles is probably as the crow flies....so basically a straight line from you to them. Or possibly the distance just from your zip code to theirs. Or the center most point of your zip code to the center most point of theirs. I have no idea how the site determines these distances but whatever method is used, it's definitely an inexact science.

The Y miles obviously approximate mileage by car which is almost never going to be a straight line from you to them.

Also, keep in mind that these distances are based on zip codes rather than a more specific coordinate like your street address. One couple that we met through this site showed as being like 60 miles away from us. Turned out that we only lived less than 20 miles away from each other. There's also people who lived within our same zip code who showed as living 0 miles away. But that particular zip code covered such a large area, that it was over 30 miles from door to door. We were living in the SoCal desert at that time so our zip code covered a really large area. Just gotta roll with it.

One thing i hate is when you are on main page, say, random pics, close to you or who's on and it says X miles away and X minutes. I'll see a profile that says 20 miles or minutes and actually its about 50 and someone closer will say the same amount or more. Theres alot of couples closer to us than Roanoke yet random people close to us always pulls up Roanoke which it says 81 miles. Roanoke is about 2 hours from us

If this site operated on a 2002-2003 level, that would actually be a major upgrade. The framework for this site is early modern internet....like mid-90's type shit.

Basically, the last time this site was on par with "modern" design and functionality, Clinton was President, the Spice Girls were topping pop charts, the Bulls were busy winning 72 reg season games, the Unibomber was arrested, Windows NT was Microsoft's next big thing, the first sheep was successfully cloned, eBay held it's first online auction and 2Pac was still alive.

I've been on SLS for the past 5 years and I've seen very little progress in the way of site upgrades. Honestly, the site is operating on a 2002-2003 functionality and there are other sites that are probably running circles around SLS as far as upgrades.

Does anyone know if they're are any upgrades in the works?
