Original Starting post for this thread:
A hallucination, in broadest sense of the word, is a perception in the absence of a stimulus. In a stricter sense, hallucinations are defined as perceptions in a conscious and awake state in the absence of external stimuli which have qualities of real perception, in that they are vivid, substantial, and located in external objective space. The latter definition distinguishes hallucinations from the related phenomena of dreaming, which does not involve wakefulness; illusion, which involves distorted or misinterpreted real perception; imagery, which does not mimic real perception and is under voluntary control; and pseudohallucination, which does not mimic real perception, but is not under voluntary control. Hallucinations also differ from "delusional perceptions", in which a correctly sensed and interpreted genuine perception is given some additional (and typically bizarre) significance.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Prosecutors say a South Florida family of gypsies amassed $40 million in a fortune-telling scam, warning victims that if they didn't follow their advice, terrible things would happen to them or their loved ones.

Details spilled out in federal court Friday after eight people were arrested earlier this week.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Laurence Bardfeld said victims who were going through vulnerable phases forked over cash, gold coins and jewelry. The defendants promised victims they wouldn't spend the money, but then refused to return it.

The Sun Sentinel reports that one victim, a bestselling author, gave an estimated $20 million.

Authorities started investigating in 2007 after a victim complained about losing $3,000.

An attorney for one family member said the clan provided counseling for victims who had nowhere to turn.

Police are investigating if drugs were involved in the death of a Florida megachurch pastor who was found dead in his Times Square hotel room.

There was an envelope filled with white powder allegedly inside the shorts of the Rev. Zachery Tims Jr, 42, the New York Daily News reported. Tims, who leads the 8,000-member New Destiny Christian Center near Orlando, was found lying face up on the floor of his room in the W Hotel by workers on Friday, according to The Wall Street Journal.

New York Police Department officials don't suspect foul play, according to reports, because his room was locked from the inside and none of his valuable belongings appeared to be missing. Police said his body showed no evidence of trauma.

Tims was in town for a meeting and was scheduled to fly next to Texas, the Daily News said.

An autopsy performed over the weekend was inconclusive, while toxicology tests will take weeks to complete, The Christian Post said.

Drugs had a role in Tims' life before he founded the church with his then-wife Riva in 1996. His biography on the New Destiny website said: "After Dr. Tims was miraculously saved, instantly delivered from drug addiction, and called into ministry, he determined to make his young life count by simultaneously earning two Bachelor’s degrees."

Tims has four children from his marriage with Riva, which ended in 2009 after he admitted to having an affair with a stripper, The Wall Street Journal said.

A prayer service on Monday at New Destiny Christian Center drew 2,000 people, according to The Orlando Sentinel. Tims' ex-wife spoke and told the audience that he'd vacationed in Puerto Rico with his family a week before he died.

"We lost one of our leaders," said the Rev. Willie Barnes, a Baptist pastor who spoke at the service. "His ministry was very, very powerful, especially to young people. He brought a different style of ministry, and it reached a lot of the younger generation because it wasn't so traditional," Barnes said, according to the Sentinel.

A Blog Essay About Sheeple [part 2 of 2]

Truthout has a good article {July 2011} about the propaganda techniques employed by Fox News. I'm particularly concerned by the fourth tactic:

4. Rewriting History. This is another way of saying that propagandists make the facts fit their worldview. The Downing Street Memos on the Iraq war were a classic example of this on a massive scale, but it happens daily and over smaller issues as well. A recent case in point is Palin's mangling of the Paul Revere ride, which Fox reporters have bent over backward to validate. Why lie about the historical facts, even when they can be demonstrated to be false? Well, because dogmatic minds actually find it easier to reject reality than to update their viewpoints. They will literally rewrite history if it serves their interests. And they'll often speak with such authority that the casual viewer will be tempted to question what they knew as fact.

Under such circumstances, how can truth prevail?

It is ironic that in the era of 24-hour cable news networks and "reality" programming, the news-to-fluff ratio and overall veracity of information has declined precipitously. Take the fact Americans now spend on average about 50 hours a week using various forms of media, while at the same time cultural literacy levels hover just above the gutter.

Let's add in another factor: The arrogance of ignorance.

Modern Americans -- particularly younger ones -- feel too insecure to allow themselves to be taught anything. After all, if you allow yourself to be taught, you are confessing ignorance, and people laugh at the ignorant. Therefore, you will feel better about yourself if you hold onto to any rationale, however threadbare or unconvincing, that allows you to think that your long-held delusions are real.

Anyone who has ever argued with a creationist will know what I'm talking about.

Those converted to the twelve points listed (in part 1) will never revise their opinions, no matter how persuasive the counter-evidence. People believe what they want to believe. They will accept any argument, however absurd, from those who flatter their preconceptions.
