LOL - I haven't had personal experience with the written application per se... that was an experience my friend had shared with me. However, I did experience a triad that requested a thorough biographical essay prior to meeting. I suppose it can have advantages in one sense that you know quite a bit about the person prior to a face to face meeting, therefore bypassing the inevitable questions which would already be covered in the essay.
