I'm not sure why I decided to post this thread here, I think maybe I just need to hear from some women and moms. (Men are welcome of course) sorryy, it's also SO not about sex. lol. We are pretty much a patriotic family, altho recent times (and wars) have changed alot of feelings for us, perhaps we don't 'feel' as we once did. I'm sure many have family and children in the military, and I mean no disrespect in any way. Wondering what you might say to a beautiful, extremely smart young man, who because he doesn't know what he wants to do, or who he wants to be at 19 ...he thinks enlisting in the marines may be the answer. Years ago I may have thought it could be a good direction, but I don't today. I'm running out of things to say and don't want to regret not sharing any insight I may not have thought of. What would you say if it was your baby?

User Details are only visible to members.	My son's birthday is today. Firstborn and one of the most incredible people I've ever known. We all feell that way about our sons I am sure, during the teen years I was a single Mom with joint legal custody and responsible for probably about 90% of the actual parenting. I tried to parent by example with my actions and maintain an open dialog with them at all time and I inisisted on brutal honesty, sometimes I even got it. But I've always told my kids and the words still stand today even though they are grown and have their own families, there is nothing they can do in this lifetime that is so horrible that they can't come to me with a problem that I wouldn't try to help them resolve. I may not (I don't) agree with every decision they make, but I will always love them and try very hard to support or at least not interfere with the decisions they have made as adults. The point is that by letting them grow and early on encouraging them in making some of the choices during their teenage years in an environment that was filled with unconditional Love, Support, Appropriate/Consistent Discipline and Mutual Brutal Honesty-- in my opinion helped prepare them for when they became adults and responsible for themselves. Once they reached maturity, it was not easy to do so, but I have had to learn to let go, while hoping and praying that the lessons I learned from my own experiences and tried to convey to them will be remembered and incorporated into their own thought processes as they make decisions for themselves and their familes. I feel that my duty as a parent was to give them the tools and knowledge to make informed decisions, and then to let them make those decisions and respect their choices. So far, my incredible Son who is now a married man with a beautiful little blonde girl of his own has impressed the hell out of his Mama and made her very proud of him. (he he he, but I feel sorry for him though, cause that cute little toddler acts just like her Meme!!)

User Details are only visible to members.	Well, update on son: he had said before he'd rather go bankrupt in Tx than move back to Oh, so he's looking for jobs in Austin. He'll fit well there, it's more geared to him and his personality and wants/needs/abilities/skills. Younger son loves cold weather and snow, so I know he'll never move here. I like the relationship I have with both of them. It's beyond anything I'd have imagined when I left their dad. g.

One of my kids lives in another country, so we don't get to see her nearly as much as we would like to and there is always a bit more of a hassle going through customs each way. We miss her but have adjusted to the normal.

User Details are only visible to members.	My older son leaves soon to move back to Ohio b/c his business did not do well here in Texas. I'm sad, but most of all I'm heartbroken for him b/c he had hopes of making a new start here, both business wise and personally. He lived only 15 minutes away for a year, and I'm going to miss him like crazy, but above all, I just want him to be happy and successful no matter where he lives. Love my sons above anything else. User Details are only visible to members.	I was a great student headed for college on my parents plan and at 17 brought 2 marine recruiters home to meet my parents and sign parental consent. They were floored, my poor dad just sat there, like whats going on, my GIRLY girl wants to do what, NO WAY!! My mother, aunt, and grandma, cried literally, and admired those 2 hot guys in uniform. However, they did later sign and supported me the entire time. It was an amazing experience and has lasted a lifetime, Once a Marine, Always a Marine.... I would say, its a great opportunity to travel and meet people in all walks of life, earn a trade and friendships that last a lifetime, and a level of pride and commitment that will never leave your son. If thats his chosen path, more power to him, its hard, its rugged, and its scary at times, but none of us would be free if there werent people like your son, who decided to fight for our country. I say support and be very, very proud, its a hard decision, and very different than what was expected of me and the opposite of what all my friends were doing. I think its great!! And ofcourse, the most important thing, constantly write him....its keeps you going no matter where you are :)

We have found that the majority of the time when we go to a house party or swing party, or meet new friends here, they are connected in some way to the military. I think it's a great career for so many people, and not so great for others. You have to know yourself. And like with your son, my husband knew he wasn't going to college, his parents were farm people, and knew what he wanted to do. I would have been proud for either of my sons to have joined. And that is not said lightly b/c I do actually know the risks. G.

User Details are only visible to members.	I'm an armymom.. That young man of mine is my pride and joy. He's done one tour in Iraq and just recently got back from Korea. It was the hardest thing for me to accept despite know he wanted to be military since a he was little. For him, it WAS the right thing to do. We live in the country, no jobs close by. We live modestly so couldn't afford to put him through college. So in that direction it was good for him, but it also gave him discipline. Grew him up good. The hardest thing was when he went to Iraq. When they say the soldier isn't the only one fighting these wars, it's true. I suffered panic attacks when he was over there. Depression. And that's about the time I took hiatus from the lifestyle. I found that VERY few people understood what I was going through. I just couldn't deal with people telling me, " Oh I know how you feel, my son is in college and only gets to come home once a month"... Oh, that was it. This was told to me at a party. I told my husband, let's go.. and I told him I wouldn't play till he's stateside..
