I was asked to research genital herpes and so I went to pubmed, Lancet, JAMA and of course Playboy (really). It seems that the HSV-2 (genital herpes) virus is extremely common, more than one might suspect; people can carry the virus for years w/o knowing it; there are contagion possibilities before symptoms appear; it can be passed with kissing as well as oral and vaginal sex, condoms have very limited ability to reduce the spread, etc. Of course, possibilities are not probabilities, and as I have said: In all my years of sexual activity, including swinging in the 70s and 89s, I have never had any STD issue. I have never seem any mention of HSV-2 here; has anyone had any experience with it? Any evidence, anecdotal or otherwise with Lifestyle people? Just curious about the thinking of others. Thanks. User Details are only visible to members.	HSV-2 is present in about 20% of adults, HSV-1 in 58% of adults, according to the latest tests on the CDC website. Both are present in some, but it means at least one form of herpes is present in most adults and certainly most swingers. To put it more bluntly, herpes is the rule, not the exception. Most people have no symptoms, which is why so many are unaware they are infected. It's one of those viruses which is very common while at the same time awareness of how common they are is not common. HPV is a similar virus (class of viruses) present in most sexually active adults. Chickenpox is another that many are exposed to as children. Because such viruses are rarely eradicated, chickenpox can come back in later adulthood as shingles. More viruses are being discovered that live within us, occasionally causing symptoms and diseases, but mostly existing within a state of cease fire with our immune systems. In other words they are normal.
