Disease risk higher for swingers than prostitutes LONDON (Reuters) – Scientists studying swingers -- straight couples who regularly swap sexual partners and indulge in group sex at organised meeting -- say they have higher rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) than prostitutes. Dutch researchers publishing their work in the British Medical Journal showed that older swingers -- those over the age of 45 -- are particularly vulnerable and yet are a group largely ignored by healthcare services. With estimates that the swinger population could be many millions across the world, the scientists said there was a risk this untreated group could act as an STI "transmission bridge to the entire population." "Although exact estimates are unavailable, the swingers' population is probably large," wrote Anne-Marie Niekamp, who worked on the study with colleagues from Maastricht University. The Dutch study analysed the numbers of patients seeking treatment in 2007 and 2008 at three sexual health clinics in South Limburg in the Netherlands. The clinics have recorded whether a patient is a swinger since the start of 2007, in an attempt to track infection rates among this group. During the study period, there were just under 9,000 consultations at the three clinics. One in nine of the patients was a swinger, with an average age of 43. Overall, combined rates of chlamydia and gonorrhoea were just over 10 percent among straight people, 14 percent among gay men, just under 5 percent in female prostitutes, and 10.4 percent among swingers, they found. And female swingers had higher infection rates than male swingers. One in 10 older swingers had chlamydia and around one in 20 had gonorrhoea. Chlamydia is the most common sexually transmitted disease among women and in 70 percent of cases causes no symptoms. The bacterial infection can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy and infertility. Gonorrhoea is another bacterial infection which can also lead to infertility if left untreated. Niekamp said that while other high risk groups, such as young straight people, gay men and prostitutes, were relatively easy for healthcare service to identify and target for advice and help, swingers were generally a hidden community. "That makes them very hard to reach," she said in a telephone interview. "Because they are so hidden and in some ways also stigmatised, it is hard for them to come forward for STI testing and treatment."

hmmm talking statistcs; they change so rapidly that we ignore them completely. I remember back in the 80s the statistics said that u had only a 1 in 50,000 chance of contracting hiv , if u had hetrosexual relationships only and that was if one of the partners was infected . That was of coarse if the woman did not suffer a tear or scratch from a fingernail before intercourse. Statistics at that time reported that it was almost a certainty to get hiv if u had anal sex with an infected person. And that even the gay community was safe from hiv if they only had oral sex with an infected person. 5 yr later the chance of being infected hetrosexually had risen to 1 in 5000. By 1990 It was being reported that the virus was mutating so rapidly that it was hard to get a handle on statistics at all. Thart it could possibly be transmitted orally. and that it was best to practice abstinence for your safety . Any way we had required condoms since the first outbreak .Some seem to think that they are safe if they actually don't allow the guy to cum in them .Icannot imagine where they got that idea besides how are u going to prevent him from cuming in u if he is in the vagina .In closing i would like to say those who do not practice safe sex are a walking time bomb regardless of gender.

DandJ, you are EXTREMELY poor at statistics! You really should quit talking about risk.

For HIV, the risk from a single incidence with an HIV positive person is somewhere around 1 in 200. So if the person you played with played with a person who was HIV positive, that person's risk of HiV infection is about 1/200. The risk of you being infected is zero if he didn't become infected and 1 in 200 if that person fucked the HIV positive person about 200 times.

The further down the chain, the quicker the risk diminishes. So by three down the chain, the risk comes very close to zero for HIV. For herpes and HPV, virtually all of us are infected now.

It really doesn't matter much that you only play with 3 couples. It matters who those 3 couples play with, and who all those that play with those 3 couples play with....and so on.

sarah Just be Very selective,, We love to bareback also. Lots of people give us a hard time about playing that way,But we do not go to clubs or house parties. We have nothing against them but rather be around very few people at one time. We play with the same couples since we have started which is 3 and to us thats more than enough. Well I was a huge fan of bareback only until I recently received unimpeachable confirmation that there IS a Herpes 2 outbreak in the community. The narrowing down for source of infection has been to sometime between Sept and December 2009 in the Delaware, PA, MD and VA areas as attendance at several clubs during that time frame was stated.
