There is something like 12 strains of HPV and one of them causes warts (can't remember exactly). I believe my doctor said 1 out of 4 people carry some form of HPV and like any virus it can affect cells. Men can carry all but the wart strain and never reflect any symptons at all but women will detect it usually in the pap smear as cells coming up as "A-typical"...meaning they aren't quite right. So the key to not developing cervical cancer is consistent screening with pap smears when you have A-typical cells pop up.
