Funny my 14 year old Grand Daughter asked me the same thing just the other day, I will tell you as I told her:

bottom line the Dems/libs/left/NeoCommies...want to control your every move, make the USA a nanny state, tax anyone with a job to pay for those too lazy to work, hate the military and believe in no personal responsibility.

The Republicans/right, believe first in personal responsibility, capitalism, you work hard and are rewarded and anything opposite of the socialist in the democratic party.

My Grand Daughter thought about it 10 seconds, looks at me and says, "then I am a Republican" If she can figure it out that quickly I really worry about those who cannot...

Chompsky is good. Very lucid.

I once even read a Coulter book. And although it struck me as Goebbels-esque, I did learn a number of fancy two dollar words to use vitriolic ad hominem attacks during internet squabbles.

I pay attention to politics and do a little recreational reading when time permits. I really harbor no ill-will, nor consider anyone my "enemy" per se. We are all unique individuals that are the sum of our life's experiences. I do find, though, that real life is stranger than fiction. Just observing world events and thinking critically about them entertains more than the most well scripted fictional screenplay. Some of these goings on I find so bizarre that I can only quizzically conclude that humans as a specie are doomed. But once you've embraced your own inability to even define the problems -- nevermind solving them -- a person can take solitude in that and learn to deal with the things that important to them and theirs. The rest of this stuff is just entertainment. My "enemies" are puppets on the strings of my tennis shoe!

I would start with the platforms for the two political parties. This will give you a basic understanding of each of their positions, although don't expect either side to follow them to the letter.

But either party is not monolithic. There is a world of difference between Clinton and Kucinich. There is another world of difference between Goldwater conservatism and Neo-con conservatism.

One book that really changed my perspective is "A People's History of the United States" by Howard Zinn. Zinn and Noam Chomsky are probably the two most famous leftist authors and intellectuals in the US.

But I would read a bit of everything. I have never been able to get through Ayn Rand, but if you like that stuff, more power to you.

You can get a pretty good idea of the ideological bent of the current administration by looking at the PNAC website. A lot of former Administration officials came from this group.

And that's just a start. Keep in mind, there are people that study this their whole lives and have barely scratched the surface.

I reserved it at the library, thanx! Someone once told me, all knowledge is useful, even when it's from the enemy. That means your critical thinking must require all the information you can possibly gather for you to make the best judgement in any given situation. examples: slavery and human rights Johnny Cochran The Matrix Trilogy doctors Jury I thought of these on the fly. Those are my best unreseached examples.

Nothing. There's nothing that can be done. The system is so rotted and decayed that any effort amounts to spinning your wheels. But it's not human nature to embrace despair, so most will continue to rationalize why they should pick one of those two parties over the other for as long as they are all there is. Which won't be forever. Governments come and governments go; such is their nature. This one is not immune. It will implode and the next will rise to take it's place.

Best thing I can recommend is reading "How I Found Freedom in an Unfree World" by Harry Browne. Most prose that gives peace of mind comes from libertarian authors.

I agree with not playing, but that has to be a collective effort of more than 1/3 of the country. I do believe that political parties should not exist, or at least be five or more parties. Once again I agree with that fact of your beliefs must default to the two existing parties for your voice to be heard, is just wrong. But what can we do? (Not rhetorical)

Left/Right is Communism vs. Fascism. Take your pick. It's all the system offers up in this country. They both want to take all of your money and freedoms away. One side wants to spend on a social agenda, the other side wants to spend it on war. No matter how you slice it, if you play their game then you default to one camp or the other. The only winning move for the rest of us is not to play.

People say I'm whatever political party it is that I fit in. I can't tell you which because I don't know what the heck they mean. Can anyone clarify republican, democrat, left and right to me please? I know my left from my right, but apparently not politically.
