Although Mitt Romney would prefer you didn’t think about it, the true test of the quality and resilience of a nation and its political systems comes when it’s most stressed. He suggests such crises are opportunities for profit, which is why he called for the privatization of FEMA. Historically, though, Americans have seen times of crisis as a time to come together and help each other out. There’s 5% more moisture in our atmosphere and higher levels of CO2 than at any other time during human history, so it’s not surprising that we’re facing tropical storm-force winds extending out 500 miles, as Hurricane Sandy cuts a path through seven states and 50 million Americans. It’s probably not a coincidence that record-breaking Sandy is here just after the warmest September recorded and in the midst of the warmest decade ever recorded. It almost certainly represents the “new normal” in this hostile-weather new world. Which makes how we as citizens respond to these “Franken-storms,” mile-long tornados, and levee-busting floods all the more important. When President Jimmy Carter created FEMA, he did it so cities and states would never again be alone in rebuilding after catastrophes. As FEMA’s mission statement reads: "FEMA’s mission is to support our citizens and first responders to ensure that as a nation we work together to build, sustain and improve our capability to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from and mitigate all hazards." Key words there: “we work together.” Whether you’re cleaning up your neighborhood or cleaning up after a hurricane, we all know things work out best when we’re all in it together. That’s why we’ve included disaster relief efforts as part of our commons, right alongside law enforcement and fire protection. These aren’t services that work best when run for a profit or to maximize wealth for shareholders; these are services owned by “we the people” to serve “we the people,,” and work best when kept in that pure, democratic form. Every year, FEMA responds to well over 100 disaster emergencies nationwide and helps rebuild communities drenched by floods, scorched by wildfires, and toppled by tornados. FEMA has had a few failures - most notably under the Bush Administration in New Orleans after Katrina. But that was due to mismanagement at FEMA, not a flaw in the conception of FEMA. As historian and best-selling author Thomas Frank explained, Republicans say government is a “bad thing,” then when they get into government they put incompetent people in charge who run it badly, so in the future they can say, “We told you so, government is bad and doesn’t work!”

User Details are only visible to members.	Fjep: But you aren't paying enough for FEMA to work magically. You expect to see FEMA act like the agencies in movies and books. Where by they have total control and can put people where and when they want... Reality. You only bought half of what is needed. Reality. FEMA doesn't trump local authorities, and thus cannot put their people where and when they want. Reality. FEMA doesn't have protection from angry people interfering in their work and thus preventing the worker from working. Thus that FEMA worker only moves as fast as the garentee of protection can move. FEMA requires utilities to work. This means that they move slowly. The more you cut from them, the slower they work. It's kinda like a car. If you have just enough fuel to take it to the gas station driving slow... Then you drive slow and burn less gas than quckly and burn more gas and walk the remainder of the way.

"I find it amazing that so many righties here that cheered on Romney with his comments on de-funding FEMA and the GOP's decimation of the FEMA budget during this past administration now complain bitterly that the agency THEY de-funded is having any issue at ALL delivering copious aid to the storm victims. " Because if we are paying for a service, it should damn well work. All people with a tad more than functional intelligence use the resources that are available. If FEMA cannot do the job laid out for the receipt of funds it should not receive funds. Just like social security, a program that should have never been created, when a person has met the standards and paid into it, they should get their share just like the douche libtards.

Are we back to this lazy ass meme now? You DO realize that having the president 'around is a logistical nightmare for ANY locale, even in the best of situations. WHY the fuk would Obama stay around the disaster zone? Besides the fact that he is the ONE PERSON IN THE WORLD that can do his job from anywhere at any time exactly as if he was in DC. I swear, the closer we get to the election the dumber the righties sound and act here... You guys are really outdoing yourselves in the wackadoodle category this year, congrats!

That was not updated when I read it and re-posted. I heard it from a tree crew that I know here that was down there on contract to FEMA....

That's south and west of the north Atlantic Ocean coastline. Romney's private jet was flying from one battleground state to another. Why couldn't he prevent Superstorm Sandy, is he's such a great and powerful person? Dismissing Obama and Bloomberg to pimp for Romney is a sign of misperceived 'cause and effect.' You can learn about the origins of tropical storms and hurricane season watching NOAA's broadcast station, The Weather Channel. You can give to the American Red Cross. You can do what America did after Hurricane Katrina, and offer to take someone into your home during the next year while their community is cleared of debris and contamination, and rebuilding begins.

Then to lose everything in what seems like a blink of an eye. We have been there, but in our case we weren't forced to deal with Beuaraucrats Or government workers shuffling us from one line to the next. What your parents lost in losing thier home is not just a peice of property, not just a peice of real estate, but a home, a place that they felt safe and secure. To us our home was a part of our family. Many will not get it, but that is sad for them.
