That's according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which also found that homicides in each of those cities have their own local flavor. The report is based on data from the CDC’s National Violent Death Reporting System, comparing gang and non-gang data on violence and homicide. Analyzing data from between 2003 and 2008, the report looked at large cities in 17 states. Drive-by shootings, for example, were more likely to occur in gang-related homicides than other types of homicide in Los Angeles and Oklahoma City. Drive-bys accounted for 24 percent of all gang-related homicides in those two cities. While gangs are often thought to be associated with the drug trade, homicides that were both drug and gang-related were far less common than those that involved drugs alone. These figures also vary dramatically from city to city. In L.A. and Long Beach, fewer than 5 percent of all homicides were associated with known drug trade or use. In Oakland, that figure was 12.5 percent among gang-related killings, compared to 16.5 percent of non-gang homicides. In Oklahoma City, drug-related homicides made up 25.4 percent of gang-related homicides, slightly more than the 22.8 percent share of non-gang homicides. Of the top five gang homicide cities, Newark was the only city with a significantly higher proportion of drug-related gang homicides compared to non-gang homicides. And the victims also differ between cities. In Los Angeles and Oakland, most gang victims of homicide are Hispanic. In Oklahoma City, they’re mostly black – and at a significantly higher rate than non-gang homicides. This ethnic dominance seems to make sense in L.A. and Long Beach, where Hispanics make up 48 percent and 40 percent of the population, respectively. But in Oklahoma City, blacks only account for about 15 percent of the population.

Few states accurately report gang-related crime statistics well, and those that do are often limited by the information available at the crime scene. Tackling gang crime is clearly a challenge in many cities. How those crimes differ from place to place is an indication of the complexity facing law enforcement. But understanding the regional and even inter-regional differences in gang crime can help to address it and reduce the number of victims.

Red Bluff....The median income for a household in the city was $27,029, and the median income for a family was $32,799. Males had a median income of $26,807 versus $21,048 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,060. About 17.7% of families and 21.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 29.6% of those under age 18 and 9.7% of those age 65 or over. Bwhahahahhaha !!!!

It's nearly twice as many as the number of Americans lost on the battlefields of Afghanistan over these last six months. And the number of deaths is up 35 percent over the same period last year. There was a time it was called "gangland" Chicago and maybe that time has returned. Chicago teen on living amid violence: "I don't expect to have a future here" The cops tell us it's the gang members who have turned some neighborhoods into free-fire zones. More people were cut down today. Across Chicago, nine people were killed between Friday and Sunday, and two more were gunned down just hours ago - a murder rate of two a day. "It's tragic," Pastor Robin Hood told CBS News. "This is like Beirut was in the 70s. It's war." Hood lives in Chicago's North Lawndale neighborhood, where three of the victims were killed. "People are scared to come outdoors," Hood explains. "They're scared for their kids to sit on the porches and play in the playground. It's total fear." Chicago police Superintendent Gary McCarthy believes most of the violent crime in the city is "absolutely" gang-related. He said the problem has a lot to do with drugs, guns and gang wars. The city's largest gang is having an internal war. Chicago has the largest gang population in the country, with approximately 100,000 members who commit 75 to 80 percent of the city's homicides. "We're looking for ways to try to get to zero -- zero murders, zero shootings," McCarthy said. The violence increasingly claims innocent bystanders like the pregnant 17-year-old girl killed by a stray bullet through her living room window on Saturday. With a police force of 12,000 officers, there's a lot of ground to cover -- something McCarthy hopes the public understands. "I tell them I'm sorry that that condition exists," McCarthy said. "And I feel responsible for it." The police here are targeting high crime areas for more frequent patrols, and a new law signed yesterday by Illinois governor Pat Quinn holds gang leaders responsible for the crimes of their organizations. "I think that we can change the culture of these gangs -- at least that's something we're trying to do, while at the same time doing the law enforcement," McCarthy says. McCarthy says the data doesn't always show it, but the police are making progress through increasing undercover operations and greater infiltration of the gangs, as well as a crackdown against the narcotics traffic which is the fuel that keeps them going.
