Has anyone been persuaded to take a view that he or she had not previously? Has anyone said that both sides of the gun debate not only hold passionate views, but quite legitimate ones? Heller was decided 5-4. It is a close call. I doubt the nine Justices call each other "tard" or "idiots." I am all for closing the background check loopholes. Make good lists.

Biden to take gun questions from Field & Stream Vice President Joe Biden will sit down on Thursday for an interview with Field & Stream magazine to discuss the White House’s proposals to fight gun violence. And that outlet is giving readers a, um, shot at proposing questions. “Do you have a question for the Obama administration about guns? Now's your chance to get it answered!” reads the magazine's call for participants. “Any question is valid, as long as it pertains to guns.” Questions are welcome at askbiden at fieldandstream dot com. Only those that come in with a name, address and daytime contact information will be considered. The interview may be taking place on Valentine’s Day, but don’t expect too much love for the administration on the issue of guns. One of Field & Stream’s self-described "Gun Nut" columnists wondered last Friday whether the photo of President Barack Obama firing a shotgun at Camp David might have been Photoshopped. (Read the whole rant, a broadside at politicians and guns.) Biden has been Obama's point person on the issue of guns in the aftermath of the slaughter of schoolchildren in Newtown, Conn., in December. The president is expected to push a package of proposals—banning assault weapons, limiting ammunition clips to 10 rounds or less, tightening background checks on would-be gun buyers, improving mental health services—in his State of the Union speech on Tuesday.

The FBI says that essentially 80 percent of the crimes reported to police, are gang related in one way or another. However, that does not include murder, where the primary motive for gang related murders are gang rivalries; or as the FBI has described it; “friction between rivals in some criminal enterprise.” The secondary motive for gang related murder is “friction between partners in some criminal enterprise.” And of course the tertiary, third, most common reason for murder is stopping the mouths of witnesses or victims of crimes committed by gang members: followed by victims of gang initiations. For various reasons the total number of gang related homicides appears to be about 11,500; while the total for the rest of us is about 3,000. Essentially, then; the percentage of gang related homicides in the United States is about 74 percent – and rising as the number of murders among the general population declines. For those of an analytical turn of mind, that means the homicide rate among law abiding Americans is about 1.0 to 1.1 per 100,000 population.
