Libertarians have it mostly right. I wish they'd get their heads out of their asses on foreign policy

*Telling a company what their profit margin is limited to is absolutely outrageous. This precedent gives the government authority to dictate pricing and wage structures to everyone if they so choose to. *

This is part of the reason why so many Russians [Russian Orthodoxy, not Russian Jews who for the most part escaped persecution] left Russia, and to this day do business outside Russia.

If we allow the government to control business profit margins, dictate pricing and structure all wages we might as well rename the US to US of R.

Libertarianism appeals, at least briefly, to anyone who finds themselves at the receiving end of laws which control their lives in ways they do not like.

Your "forced" examples all exist to protect OTHER people from me or my junky car.

There is no reason for Washington to dictate to me how much flow can go through my shower.

"...the government forcing me to buy health insurance that meets their standards is also fascist."

You are "forced" to drive a car that meets govt safety standards, and contractors are "forced" to build safe bridges and roads for you to drive on. And you're "forced" to drive on the right side of the road.

The food industries are "forced" to maintain safe practices; you're "forced" to fly on safe airlines into safe airports. The government generally agrees that we're all better off if everyone has these safeguards. If govt didn't do it, it wouldn't get done.

Since we're all going to get sick as we approach the end of life, we all need some kind of provision for health care. Obama might have preferred truly socialized medicine; but what we got is a twisted mass of compromises. It's still better than nothing, we hope.

I'm still looking for a shred of evidence that Libertarianism appeals to anyone besides those with a severe need for oversimplification.

Robert

If the Senate ever bothered to pass a budget and Republicans refused to pass it, then you might have some argument. The Senate doesn't even try. At least the House passes budgets and then throws them to the Senate (who then refuses to consider them).

"I'll interpret "fascist" tendencies to mean "not libertarian enough" for you. I'd always thought fascism and communism were opposite extremes. "

There are degrees of everything. One can have fascist tendencies and policies without being outright hardcore fascist, just like one can have socialist, communism etc policies without being a socialist or communist, per se.

Like I said, I think the government pushing stupid shit like mandatory ultrasounds on pregnant women who contemplate abortions is a fascist policy. I also think the government forcing me to buy health insurance that meets their standards is also fascist. These two fascist policies come from opposite political extremes. Neither the left nor the right owns fascism.

As for whether or not fascism and communism are extremes - this would be the case of certain brands of fascism, but fascism does not fall cleanly along the left/right political continuum, in spite of what is commonly taught. I went through an exhaustive examination of this once before on here and have no interest in doing so again, but very quickly, the fascist platforms of Italy and Germany had many far right (anti-homosexual, minority, etc) policies but also many far left policies, such as nationalization of healthcare, massive public housing and spending, nationalization of companies that did not please the governments, social safety nets, control over salaries and compensation, prices, etc.

Obamacare is an extraordinarily fascist piece of legislation. It forces me to buy something, controls what that policy can be, controls how much the company can sell it to me for, controls how much money the company can make on it.

Now, you might argue the end justifies the means. I do not agree.

"Fascism is the polar opposite of libertarianism. "

Ah, thanks for clearing that up. I was perplexed by what you could be meaning. I'll interpret "fascist" tendencies to mean "not libertarian enough" for you.

I'd always thought fascism and communism were opposite extremes.

VA:

And to get that majority in both houses, he must have something that the republicans will vote for.
