So, you were not paying attention when we had a cold war with the Soviet Union for half a century? Russia certainly has all kinds of problems, but if Putin makes a play for the good old days of Soviet rivalry of the US, I would not put arming terrorists past him.

What about Putin and what he does makes you uneasy? Poly asked

For me first he is KGB, secondly he has taken many freedoms away from the people, and lastly he is attempting to become the Russian Chavez by becoming leader for life. He talks nice to us then sells weapons and technology to our adversaries and is weak on terrorism all the while becoming very wealthy by stealing from the Russian people.

"What about Putin and what he does makes you uneasy?"

Ummm, He was a former KGB agent who is slowly bringing back the Soviet Union. In addition, he has hatched a plan where once he runs out his term as President, he will just flip flop on over to be the Prime Minister and revise that role to make him all powerful and in that role for life.

He has been stepping up his anti-American rhetoric over the last couple of years also.

I still have trouble with the concept of conservative swingers :)

Is it just me, or is anyone uneasy with Putin? Having studied twentieth century European history including Soviet history, I for one am very concerned about what he is doing.

Debjack and JMN I'm glad you enjoyed it. If it wasn't for the different sides to the political forum, I wouldn't be a part of it.

I've laughed hard at some of the comments...truly as entertaining as it is educational.

The surprising component to this forum is finding out all the many conservatives it has; liberals and moderates are expected, but not conservatives.

Vlad Putin...

In a year when Al Gore won the Nobel Peace Prize and green became the new red, white and blue; when the combat in Iraq showed signs of cooling but Baghdad's politicians showed no signs of statesmanship; when China, the rising superpower, juggled its pride in hosting next summer's Olympic Games with its embarrassment at shipping toxic toys around the world; and when J.K. Rowling set millions of minds and hearts on fire with the final volume of her 17-year saga—one nation that had fallen off our mental map, led by one steely and determined man, emerged as a critical linchpin of the 21st century.

Russia lives in history—and history lives in Russia. Throughout much of the 20th century, the Soviet Union cast an ominous shadow over the world. It was the U.S.'s dark twin. But after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Russia receded from the American consciousness as we became mired in our own polarized politics. And it lost its place in the great game of geopolitics, its significance dwarfed not just by the U.S. but also by the rising giants of China and India. That view was always naive. Russia is central to our world—and the new world that is being born.
