"Encouraging people to spend just seems irresponsible to me."

That may be true, and I will agree somewhat, but 70+% of GDP is consumer spending. We don't really make much anymore.

We provide services and buy stuff. That is what keeps the economy running.

So NOT encouraging people to spend almost guarantees a recession.

I do not know if the stimulus will or will not work but I'll tell you...I need if nothing else a temporary relief from these gas prices. I have told my boss in Austin that I have to find an office in San Marcos because at almost $3.70 a gallon for gasoline it is more expensive for me to work almost than stay home. It makes no sense to me to pump that kind of money into my car so I will be finding employment closer to home. Will the stimulus check work? I don't know...but I tell you I'm thankful for it.

As far as I'm concerned I think the stimulus is a bad idea. Encouraging people to spend just seems irresponsible to me. I wasn't raised that way. Outside of a home mortgage my parents did not borrow. Things were bought by need and affordabilty, not want!! It's sad this economy has become addicted to wanted spending. Both parties are responsible, along with the media, and their sponsors.

I believe the money would have been better spent encouraging new business, thus creating jobs, which would bring about spending. Same with welfare, I know it is a necessity, but I think the emphasis should be on creating a welcome business environment, which would then employ, instead of handing out.

One of the biggest areas where small business has problems is the cost of insurance. And this is do to the amount of lawsuits that are filed for anything and everything. How many jobs could have been provided by the money McDonald's used to defend themselves from the hot coffee suit, or the suits for making some Americans fat. Come on where is responsibility these days. Funny I don't here Obama talking about this. This is one area where we really need change.

no matter where you physically put the funds, the money will be spent for food, gas and the other rising costs of necessities.

Mine goes into savings.

Or maybe to pay some credit card debt.

bad idea, but the people will use it to buy staples and offset the higher prices, gas, food, necessities.

smarter people then me can give you the pure economic perspective but the basic idea is that the checks will be spent by the consumer thus increasing the consumer spending which is the wheel which spins our economy. unfortunately with sky high gas and food costs most people will not spend it as intended and it most likely have little effect..
