The "fiscal cliff" is the expiration of the Bush/Obama tax cuts, the payroll tax reduction, and the Congress passed "sequester," where there will be automatic cuts in domestic and military spending. The sequester is about 120 billion in cuts per year for the next ten years. The expiration of the Bush/Obama tax cuts is about 42 billion. The Congressional Budget Office says that letting all of these changes happen would reduce the deficit by $500 billion in the first year. It would also increase unemployment to 9.1%, and reduce GDP by half a percent, putting us back in recession. They also say we will come out of the recession fairly quickly. The CBO seems to think it is worth it.

Is it even possible to tax us out from the deficit? seriously, economics is not my strong point (though certainly not the weakest), tell me, how do we tax our way out of the deficit without cutting spending? What am I missing. From my understanding, allowing the tax cuts to expire, will reduce the deficit by USD 80BB, that's a drop in the bucket, nothing really. Where else is the money going to come from? Anyone?

Because short of occupying the US, the UN will have no means of making the single nation with the largest military do anything. Yes, after the fall, unless we fight a civil war, we will still have a big military and our nukes. As it stands, we and the UN cannot bring either Iran or Isreal to its knees. Now you think the world will bring the US to its knees? <<< Robert walks away laughing.>>>

But look where it led them, nationalism can be a dangerous thing. It is what brought us the patriot act under Bush after 9/11. To be honest I cannot see the American people pulling together. The people hurt the most will continue to blame the people who can survive. It may be a chance to dramatically change the constitution also. I believe we will become a UN puppet nation. One of the big questions is how well will the military and the police hold together without pay? Will they abandon their families to suffer to do the UN's bidding? If a race is blamed like Germany, which race would be blamed? That is part of what pulled Germany together, blaming a group. Look what happened.

(insert great depression) China, Russia, the US, and then Europe in this order will implode. Why? Because china lives off the things they can sell to the US and others... If they lose the US market, they are done. Russia relies on oil, gas and other fossil fuel sales. If china isn't making things, china isn't buying oil. The price drops a large bit. As things get worst in the US, we stop being able to drive as much... The economy continues to come to a halt... We buy even less oil, Russia loses more profits. The US no longer can stand alone, we rely upon china for cheap junk and other manufacturing. We rely upon Russia helping oil nations dig for oil. (namely the nations we don't like.) our economy ends as we know it. Once everyone else has fallen, Europe will run out of oil as Russia cannot charge anything meaningful for their oil. Europe begins to fall. Now the rise. The third world nations which aren't yet oil dependent will rise up from the ashes as we scramble to build factories and rebuild... Economically and in some cases socially, all will be more even and competitive again. The question no one can claim to have answers to beyond pulling from thei asses, is what kind of economy will we have coming out of the second great depression? History shows a push towards socialism or communism. We flirted with socialism in the 2nd depression (otherwise know as the great depression), we will likely go all in for socialism this time around.
