It just doesn't pay to question the tax man anyway...

"The Tax Man: You just docked?

Popeye: I has.

The Tax Man: Ah ha, let's see here, that'll be 25¢ docking tax.

Popeye: What for?

The Tax Man: Where's your sea craft?

Popeye: It ain't no sea craft, it's me dinghy and it's under the wharf.

The Tax Man: Ah ha. ahh-ha. This your goods?

Popeye: They is.

The Tax Man: Yeah. You're new in town right?

Popeye: If you call this a town, yes.

The Tax Man: Well, first of all, there's 17¢ new-in-town tax, and there's 45¢ rowboat-under-the-wharf tax, and one dollar leaving-your-junk-lying-around-the-wharf tax, so all together, you owe the Commodore $1.87.

Popeye: Uh, who's this Commodore?

The Tax Man: Is that the nature of question? There's a nickel question tax."

Soon to come- the tax on taxes tax.

Oh and yes, I am well aware of the fact that the Wall St. Journal and other sites have reported this as Pfizer "extending their patent until 2019". When you read, the article, you'll see it says exactly what I said, but without the awesome explanation of how patents work. The jackass who wrote that article obviously has no idea.

Your understanding of this is incorrect. The example you pulled up there has nothing to do with lobbyists, corporate pressure, or politics. It's straight up patent law.

Patents are good for 20 years from the application date. There are three basic types of invention patents - a novel invention, a novel usage for an existing invention, or an improvement on an existing invention.

There are two separate patents regarding Viagra - one is a patent on the molecule itself and its usage for treatment of angina, which expired in 2012, and one is a patent on the usage as a treatment for erectile dysfunction, which expires in 2019. The potential for erectile dysfunction was not apparent when the drug was first developed.

So - you are free to market generic Sildenafil as an angina treatment all you like, provided your manufacturing complies with cGMP (i.e. FDA regulations). It is no longer a patented material. However, the usage for erectile dysfunction treatment is still in effect, and will be until 2019 - 20 years after they patented it in 1999. This is not an extension. It's a novel patent.

If you discover that Sildenafil is effective as an arthritis treatment, you can patent the application, and nobody but you can market it as arthritis treatment for 20 years from your date of application without your permission. Not Pfizer. Not Teva. Nobody. Just you.

“Copyrights eventually expire, and thus intellectual property is “seized” by the public.”

Well, kinda, sorta, Out – The big pharmaceuticals lobby congress to keep granting patent extensions for expensive drugs, so their profits don’t drop should the drug go generic and other companies start making it more cheaply. Pfizer got its patent protection for Viagra extended to 2020. Try “seizing” that.

Big:

"when the goverment spends so much that they bankrupt the country and then turn around and tax you more to cover thier spending. THEY ARE STEALING FORM YOU."

If the wealthy paid a living wage to every adult who worked, the government would be aflow in cash.

There was a time when the wealthy did this, it was the golden years for the US and at the time the US spent all of that cash on the Military industrial complex, two useless wars (Korea and Vietnam.)

"they are to provide services that you need.not to pay for thier lavish life style,"

I agree, that is why I demand that the wealthy be taxed for the lavish lifestyle that they live. After all, when the welfare receipiant is able to buy the Xbox or Iphone... Investors are making money off of people who are subsadized by the government.

That welfare money is immiediately recycled into the local economy, but the investors who get their money from Best buy and wal-mart don't use that money in their local economies... They send it to china by means of buying more phones and Xboxes from China.

"or use your money to buy votes,"

If the wealthy provided medical, upward mobility and or education and a living wage.. The people wouldn't have to turn to the government. But as the wealthy choose to be lazy and not do their jobs by providing for the masses, they get to pay for the government to do their job for them.

"or give your money to other people to live on for free,"

Again we agree, this is why the wealthy ought to pay for the welfare system. They fail to pay from their pockets to create jobs, to keep jobs here in the US and the workers at a first world nation status. So once more they get to pay for the damage they choose to create by means of their own greed.

"or over size contracts to builb projects that we don't need just to pay off kickbacks.aka congress spending budget.....BS"

Most every one of those over sized contracts pay employees to do something, unless you want government factories, more government workers... Complain to the private contractors who are paid to do a job or get off your lazy ass, open multiple companies and under bid the contractors currently receiving those fat government contracts.
