You can not defend anyone else without these weapons, and simply parking an aircraft carrier someplace without the intent to use it if it is ignored is pointless and foolish. You don't bluff with a gun, you draw it, the next heart bet is you pulling the trigger... Not more talk. The movies have talk, reality is you pull then shoot, there is no talk... Time for talking ended the moment the aircraft carrier arrived off the coast. If you think that I am nuts, if you think that I am blowing smoke... We get involved, well expect them to be civilized like us, no more stoning their women, no more exilement of non-believers. (islamics), ect... A fantasy land that the west lives in. We can't help these people, and by giving the Russians/Chinese the middle finger and risking out right war with them... To say the least what the dick measuring will do to the global economy... Is economic suicide. The east belongs to the Russians and chinese. We have our own probles with the south that we all want to ignore. Problems that are escalating with Mexico being on the verge of faild state... A nation more like us than Syria will ever be. (to say nothing about the problems in the US itself.)

ABC News Obama on Syria: ‘It’s Important That We Not Be Bystanders’ Arguing that the U.S. cannot be “bystanders” as the Syrian government continues to massacre its own people, President Obama Friday afternoon called for the international community to pressure Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step down. “All of us who have been seeing the terrible pictures coming out of Syria and Homs recently recognize it is absolutely imperative for the international community to rally and send a clear message to President Assad that it is time for a transition, it is time for that regime to move on and it is time to stop the killing of Syrian citizens by their own government,” he said this afternoon after an Oval Office meeting with Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is in Tunis, Tunisia, attending a “Friends of Syria” conference of 60 nations, which called for Assad to end the violence, and to allow humanitarian aid into parts of the country hardest hit by his crackdown. Earlier today, at a press conference, Clinton urged the Syrian military to lay down its arms. “They’re continuing to kill their brothers and sisters is a stain on their honor,” said Clinton. “Their refusal to continue this slaughter will make them heroes in the eyes of not only Syrians, but people of conscience everywhere. They can help the guns fall silent.” She also criticized China and Russia for vetoing a United Nations Security Council resolution aimed at Syria. “It’s quite distressing to see two permanent members of the Security Council using their veto while people are being murdered — women, children, brave young men, houses are being destroyed. It is just despicable and I ask whose side are they on?” she asked. “They are clearly not on the side of the Syrian people.” President Obama said he was “encouraged by the international unity that we are developing and the meeting that took place in Tunisia that Secretary Clinton has attended and we are going to continue to keep the pressure up and look for every tool available to prevent the slaughter of innocents in Syria. And this is an area where I think the Prime Minister and I deeply agree that it’s important that we not be bystanders during these extraordinary events.” Others in the U.S. have called for further actions to hasten the end of Assad’s reign, with Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., among others calling for the U.S. to help arm the rebels. The Obama administration has been reluctant to go that far, with concerns about possible extremist ties among the insurgent groups. The president said he discussed other issues with Thorning-Schmidt, including counter-terrorism cooperation, putting Afghans in the lead in security in Afghanistan, the European economy, and how “the operations in Libya could not have been as effective” without the Danish armed forces and pilots.

KRISTOF President Obama’s finest moments in foreign policy, like the Osama bin Laden raid or the Libya intervention, resulted from close engagement and calculated risks. His lapses come when he’s passive or AWOL — as in Syria. I’m generally a fan of Obama’s foreign policy, but on Syria there’s a growing puzzlement around the world that he seems stuck behind the curve. The United States shouldn’t invade Syria. But we should work with allies to supply weapons, training and intelligence to rebels who pass our vetting. I’m in Aspen for the annual meeting of the Aspen Strategy Group, a bipartisan group looking at international affairs, and I’m struck by how many strategists whom I respect think it’s time to move more aggressively. William Perry, a secretary of defense under Bill Clinton, told me that if he were in the Pentagon today, he would be recommending a military intervention in Syria — conditioned on Turkey’s participation and without ground forces. Specifically, he said he would favor imposing a no-fly no-drive zone in northern Syria. “This isn’t a full strategy, but it could facilitate the overthrow of Assad and have a real humanitarian benefit,” Perry said. “And if successful, it could help us influence the post-Assad government. If we sit by, we’ll be in no position to influence it.” Madeleine Albright, who was secretary of state under Clinton, told me: “I’m for intervention, but it doesn’t have to be on-the-ground military intervention. We do have to get more involved in this.” Albright said that the American intervention should be multilateral, but that the inability to achieve a Security Council resolution shouldn’t block action any more than it did in Kosovo in 1999. “We can’t afford to be in a cul-de-sac while people are being killed,” she said. As I see it, there are three main reasons for action in Syria. First, the longer the fighting goes on, the more it destabilizes the region. Syria is now in a civil war linked to the Sunni-Shiite divide in the region. The more deaths, the more refugees, the more revenge killing, the tougher it will be to put Humpty Dumpty together. The longer the war persists, the more risk of spillover into Lebanon, Iraq and Jordan. Second, Assad is believed to have many tons of sarin and VX nerve agents. Those chemical weapons could end up in the hands of jihadis or on the global black market, and we should work with Syrian rebels to help secure them if necessary. Third, there’s a humanitarian imperative. It appears that several times more people have been killed in Syria than in Libya when that intervention began, and the toll is rising steeply. Protesters began peacefully but have been subjected to unspeakable violence. An iconic victim is a boy named Hamza al-Khateeb, who was apparently detained at an anti-Assad demonstration — and then sexually mutilated and tortured to death at the age of 13. What can we do? One step would be for the United States to move naval forces off the Syrian coast, while Turkey and Israel moved more troops close to their borders with Syria. This would pin down Syrian troops so that Assad would have fewer forces available to murder his people. Anne-Marie Slaughter, a Princeton scholar who previously served as a senior Obama administration official, has offered sensible proposals for action. She suggests that the United States and other countries provide antitank and antiaircraft weapons and perhaps air cover to commanders who protect civilians and eschew sectarian or revenge killings. Some Free Syrian Army commanders have signed such a code of conduct. With our allies, we can also advise Syrian commanders that if they abandon Assad they may have a role in Syria’s future. If they go down with Assad, they won’t.

I answered your question and I served and did my time, and saw combat. The question is why you are so upset about a proposition I never brought up.

Try seeing a soldier laid out on a table, his left arm a stump, tubs sticking out if his body and no way to get him to better help, because the air field is unusable... Again. The aging airfield had been made of asphalt and my unit wasn't allowed to fix it... Had to be the locals who did the work... Despit my units specialty of airfield maintence. (red horse, airfields, pavement and equipment)
