And, to answer this question:

"The one question I would ask here is what is the purpose of the strike?"

I believe this is the answer:

"[We are] swatting a baby on the butt when they get too close to the stove"

I don't think this is an Obama-specific situation. I think any President would be faced with the same problem, the same choices, the same pitfalls of each choice, etc.

btw: this post of yours was excellent.

"The one question I would ask here is what is the purpose of the strike?

Are we swatting a baby on the butt when they get too close to the stove?

Are we trying to give the rebels the upper hand?

If we go through with the strike, and Syria continues using chemical weapons, what then?

Assad will do just about anything to stay in power, that's pretty obvious. And the alternative, as we have seen many times since 1989, is not optimal...

I think Obama's mistake in this case (and several others) is assuming that he was dealing with rational people. He is not.

On the other hand, we can't go around being the world's policeman...

I wouldn't want to trade places with Obama on this one..."

"because there is no chance that we will put ground troops in."

Never say never.

What if Syria retaliates against any strike we do? Do they have the capability to attack our ships launching the attack (successfully or not)?

Surely there is a point where we *would* send in ground troops....

More importantly, what happens when we pull the trigger and the world turns its back on us? Who's going to be there should we ever legitematly need them? We can stop fighting if we want to, we just don't want to. We will lose all credibility once those missiles are in the air!

I am not so worried that we will get bogged down there, because there is no chance that we will put ground troops in. Logistically, that would be more of a nightmare than Afghanistan...

But I do want a clear reason why we are doing this. Countries kill their subjects on a semi-regular basis. Why is this situation different?

And why are we doing it? To stop the use of chemical weapons? What assurance do we have that this will work?

And, finally, what happens when Assad is gone? That's the biggest question...

Perf he should have done it 8 months ago. It is too late. As always he is behind the cart. When the opposition had the upper hand. Not now with Iranian troops in place and Assad making head way. All of his cowards and traitor's are gone by now.

You won't find too many that dislike Obama more than I do.

That being said, you have to trust that he's acting in the best interest of USA. Nobody here, or even in the press, has access to all the info that he does. NO President takes these things lightly. I'll support his decision just like I supported GWB's.

It is growing methodically and patiently with nothing but time. They have waited this long what is another decade or so?
