"You weren't pushing for any of those views. You were trying to be a douche. "

I'm not sure what you're referencing - probably the Palestinian bus thing from yesterday.

If calling a chickenshit answer a chickenshit answer is me being a douche, so be it. I'm not the one who jokes that "white people need guns to go meet their new colored neighbors."

Minimum wage in 1980 (when I figure you would have been 19) was $3.10 an hour, equal to $8.66 now. So the $7.25 an hour is 84% of that. So yes it's a little lower.

If you don't think I tend to take libertarian principles, you haven't been reading much I've ever written.

You are taking the standpoint that it's the role of the feds to make sure everyone makes enough money. I am diametrically opposed to that notion.

The best way for my daughter (or anyone like her) to immediately be able to get more money is to get rid of Obamacare and let her hours go back to 29 a week. She'll get nothing from the law but it cost her 11 hours (~$80) a week.

So anyway - if you want to push for an increase in a wage that almost nobody makes just to feel warm and fuzzy, go for it. I don't agree with you.

"Well, if you know anything about me you know I push for libertarian standpoints wherever practical. And I believe this is one of them."

You weren't pushing for any of those views. You were trying to be a douche.

The last time I made minimum wage I was a teenager. I think it was about three something an hour. It barely doubled in over 35 years.

Everything else has more than doubled.

So are you trying to say that minimum wage today has the same spending power it did twenty years ago?

Maybe in Canada but not here in the US.

Well, if you know anything about me you know I push for libertarian standpoints wherever practical. And I believe this is one of them.

The argument that the minimum wage is the only thing keeping people from getting paid peanuts for their work is a fallacy. The proof is easy enough to see - you proved it for me. If employers were really motivated to pay everyone minimum wage, there would be far more people being paid at that rate. You have proven it yourself without intending to do so - the country does not, to any significant degree, operate on minimum wage.

So what is raising the minimum wage intended to do? Raising the Federal minimum wage would actually *increase* the number of people making it, by two mechanisms:

1. Swallowing up people who make more, but not much more, than the minimum wage. If someone makes $8.50 an hour and the minimum wage goes to $9, now they will be making minimum wage.

2. In a related way, many states have higher minimum wage laws, and if they were above the Fed minimum before, they might not be now.

My daughter is 21 years old. She works full time at Starbucks. Well, OK she *DID* work full time at Starbucks until New Years when they cut back almost everyone to 29 hours a week to fall under the Obamacare threshold, so she's trying to pick up a 2nd job which will give her maybe 10-15 hours a week. She lives with her boyfriend who works at a grocery store and they have a nice apartment near the mall. I don't know if they make minimum wage exactly but I'm pretty sure they don't make a lot more.

They manage to survive somehow with no money from anyone, although they are generally broke and jump at a free dinner whenever we offer. I know her finances inside and out because she often seeks my advice with how to manage them. She doesn't have all kinds of maxed out credit cards or anything. She probably qualifies for food stamps but she definitely doesn't take them. She'd be mortified at the idea of doing so.

So what's the big deal? She's 21. I made minimum wage when I was 21 too. I survived. We all did. Raising their income slightly won't help them if one of them loses their job due to minimum wage increases. And yes, minimum wage increases cost jobs. This is demonstrable.

There's no reason to do it other than political. The woman in the example is a young woman who needs to get her shit together. Payday loans and pawn shops? That's why you're fucking broke, idiot.

Discussion.

There was two views for and against. What's your motivation? Do you question everyone who makes a post?

One thing at a time here...

What is the message you are trying to convey with your story? What is the President pushing the minimum wage increase intended to do?

The popular perception is that this country is awash in families struggling to survive on minimum wage. The data you provide shows this is not the case. So what's the motivation? Why is this a story?

So you don't think the minimum wage should get a raise? The price of rice has gone up since the last time they raised it...
