So 7 Republican Senators published the following in a joint letter to Senate majority and minority leadership: "The war in Iraq is the most pressing issue of our time. It urgently deserves the attention of the full Senate and a full debate on the Senate floor without delay. .... We will explore all of our options under the Senate procedures and practices to ensure a full and open debate on the Senate floor. The current stalemate is unacceptable to us and to the people of this country." What's stupid about it? No matter what you feel about the resolution (which really isn't worth much, being non-binding and therefore assured of Bush's ignoring it) - five of the Senators who signed - John Warner, Chuck Hagel, Olympia Snowe, Gordon Smith, and George Voinovich - actually voted against cloture with the rest of the Republicans, killing the debate. So you vote to kill debate - and then you write letters protesting that there was no debate. Is there anything more stupid?

What's stupid about it? I think you're being highly insincere, which surprises me coming from you because in general you've been quite honest with your discussions. You clipped one small section out of the letter that Hagel/Warner et. al. wrote to their Senate leaders, then mischaracterized their intent. If anyone reads the full text of the letter: tinyurl dot com/3xzpfb they will find that the intent of the committee Republicans was to implore their Senate leaders to ammend this resolution to an upcoming bill. That would allow the entire Senate the opportunity to get a say on their recommendations, and additionally give it some teeth. "We strongly believe the Senate should be allowed to work its will on our resolution as well as the concepts brought forward by other Senators. Monday's procedural vote should not be interpreted as any lessening of our resolve to go forward advocating the concepts of S. Con. Res. 7." Read the letter.

User Details are only visible to members.	Bet the republican senators are really glad they didn't exercise that "nuclear option" to stop the dems ability to fillibuster back when. If they had, they'd have no fillibuster option themselves in the current senate.
