I don't think they all like government taking care of them.If my brother could work he would. no one spends 8yrs in the military and 10yrs in law enforcement and then decides it better to live of the government. he votes the way he does because he places his religious beliefs ahead of his monetary needs.

"Some of them don't realize it though. "

That's a whole different issue. :-)

"We're talking about individuals here."

Anecdotally then I know lots of people who vote contrary to their financial interests. Some of them don't realize it though.

Isn't the whole thrust of Romney's statements that these 47% are defective in some way, that they are less valuable, less smart, less deserving, and just overall not someone that you would want to have a drink with? *

No, that's not what I got. I'm interpreting it as him saying that this is the population that is spoken for, they will vote for Obama, so he doesn't need to worry about working on changing their mind.

This is why in Florida, where my husband just came back from, for every Romney ad, there are 4 of Obama's. I'm certain it's the same with Ohio. Whereas in NY, NJ, I've seen maybe 5 ads in the past 2 months for either.

It's also related to the educational level of the state. Better informed populations do not tend to vote Republican.

"So your brother votes agaiinst his own best interest. I don't think there are many that do."

Really? High per capita income states like Connecticut routinely elect candidates who favor policies that have the effect of transferring wealth to poor states like Mississippi. And Mississippi elects candidates who oppose those policies.

"Not trying to be too snarky here, but wasn't that really what he was saying? "

I don't think so. I think he was implying that those 47% like big Gov't taking care of them.
