Criticality accidents have happened before and, while they are certainly a serious situation, it is not accurate to say "they cannot be stopped".

While a situation in which a meltdown of the stored fuel rods is technically possible, one would have to just about do it on purpose. Rods don't just "go critical" from being mishandled - they're not blasting caps. In order to achieve a "meltdown" one would have to stack a number of rods on top of one another in a pyramid-like pattern i.e. several consecutive dumb actions.

Go ahead and enlighten me va, because I just had a conversation with a professor of nuclear chemistry at Stony Brook University this afternoon (my sons prof in fact) who apparently spends a great deal of time at Brookhaven ( you know, the National Lab) who vociferously disagrees with your statement.

I cited websites, one a blog by another professor. In the other sites I provided are dozens of statements by many other well known and learned experts. You need to come up with more than the typical conservative "bullshit, you are a moron" statement to hold any water at all.

I'm waiting....

While the removal of the fuel is an interesting and challenging undertaking, whoever wrote that either knows little about nuclear chemistry or is making deliberate misstatements for the purposes of making the article more dramatic.

Understand that a goodly portion of the reactors in our very own country are the exact same model or one so close it's the same thing. Not only that, nearly 30% of them sit in situations similar to Fukushima; on or close to an earthquake zone, on a coast or in some other dangerous situation (upstream dams for one). Not only that, nearly ALL of them are sited near very large population centers.

Oh, we store as much or more fuel assemblies on site as the Japanese did/do.

Might want to limber up and get ready to grab your ankles to kiss your fat asses goodbye sooner than you think....

Remember I told you to keep an eye on this? Well take a look at this folks. Maybe if we are presented with a "extinction event" we will realize what we are doing to this only home we have? Read on....

(Clip) Fukushima operator TEPCO wants to extract 400 tons worth of spent fuel rods stored in a pool at the plant’s damaged Reactor No. 4. The removal would have to be done manually from the top store of the damaged building in the radiation-contaminated environment.

In the worst-case scenario, a mishandled rod may go critical, resulting in an above-ground meltdown releasing radioactive fallout with no way to stop it, said Consolo, who is the founder and host of Nuked Radio. But leaving the things as they are is not an option, because statistical risk of a similarly bad outcome increases every day, she said.

RT: How serious is the fuel rod situation compared to the danger of contaminated water build-up which we already know about?

Christina Consolo: Although fuel rod removal happens on a daily basis at the 430+ nuclear sites around the world, it is a very delicate procedure even under the best of circumstances. What makes fuel removal at Fukushima so dangerous and complex is that it will be attempted on a fuel pool whose integrity has been severely compromised. However, it must be attempted as Reactor 4 has the most significant problems structurally, and this pool is on the top floor of the building.

There are numerous other reasons that this will be a dangerous undertaking.

- The racks inside the pool that contain this fuel were damaged by the explosion in the early days of the accident.

- Zirconium cladding which encased the rods burned when water levels dropped, but to what extent the rods have been damaged is not known, and probably won't be until removal is attempted.

- Saltwater cooling has caused corrosion of the pool walls, and probably the fuel rods and racks.

- The building is sinking.

- The cranes that normally lift the fuel were destroyed.

- Computer-guided removal will not be possible; everything will have to be done manually.

- TEPCO cannot attempt this process without humans, which will manage this enormous task while being bombarded with radiation during the extraction and casking.

- The process of removing each rod will have to be repeated over 1,300 times without incident.

- Moving damaged nuclear fuel under such complex conditions could result in a criticality if the rods come into close proximity to one another, which would then set off a chain reaction that cannot be stopped.

What could potentially happen is the contents of the pool could burn and/or explode, and the entire structure sustain further damage or collapse. This chain reaction process could be self-sustaining and go on for a long time. This is the apocalyptic scenario in a nutshell.

What are we to do? Nuke Japan?... Again?

Short of physically taking over the plant, there isn't anything we can do. Even then, we would need to learn from the Japanese how bad things are.

This is why strong government oversight is needed for nuclear power plants.

The Japanese government is still trying to come to terms with what is and what isn't too much interference in people's lives. They do not wish to risk in the least bit a return to any society that would allow a rise of a military or authoritarian government.

Because the Japanese social structure is to mind your own business and adapt to the junk someone else dumps on you, the people rarely hole the government accountable.

This is why this kind if accident doesn't happen more often in the US and even when it does happen, it is more easially containable.

Like chynobal, fukashima was a fluke allowed to happen by ignorance and a governments inability to hold people accountable, while providing the needed support to the company incharge of the plant.

I find it odd in the extreme that Americans would rather argue vehemently about political minutia, even threaten to secede but when faced with a clear and present danger like this can't even muster the strength or moral fortitude to even comment in a heated political thread when the topic comes up....

Speaking to Radio Australia, Buesseler pointed out that TEPCO is using millions of liters of water to cool the Fukushima reactors, and the fact that so much radiation is turning up in the ocean is proof that the utility is not able to contain it all once it has been contaminated. The Fisheries Agency has pointed out (probably to TEPCO’s disfavor) that even if the cesium particles were washing down from the mountains, it wouldn’t be enough to contaminate such a large number of species. Although their theory is just as absurd: that the cesium is gradually being absorbed into the seabed, and once that occurs, it’s not so easily absorbed/ingested by organisms.

The results of Wood Hole’s study highlights the fact that it will be at least several decades before fish from off of Fukushima’s coast will be safe to catch and eat. The ocean, food chain, and Japan’s fishing industry have all been irreparably damaged by the Fukushima crisis, and that damage is still ongoing. The Japanese government and TEPCO’s excuses are only wasting time that should be put towards finding a solution.

TEPCO, Japanese government denying Fukushima radiation reaching ocean fish

In what must the most dumbfounding state of denial seen in modern times, both the Japanese government and utility Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) are disputing the recent study that showed radiation from the Fukushima nuclear plant is leaking into the ocean. 18 months after the March 2011 nuclear disaster, the U.S.’s Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, a respected research group, reported that 40% of the fish caught off the coast of Fukushima were still testing positive for radioactive contamination above the government’s safety own limits.

Scientist Ken Buesseler of Woods Hole stated that while it was expected to still find some levels of contamination, 40% was far too high of a measurement after a year and a half had passed. He said there are only two explanations for radiation remaining in the food chain like this: either there is a source of radioactive cesium somewhere on the seafloor, or it is being discharged into the sea by contaminated groundwater from the Fukushima plant.

TEPCO and the Japanese government each deny one of the possibilities. The Fisheries Agency, operated by the government, says the contamination is sinking deeper into the seabed and therefore can’t be still entering the food chain. TEPCO, on the other hand, states there are no leaks of tainted ground water at the Fukushima nuclear site. A spokesman for the utility company says their studies of the seabed show low levels of contamination among the organisms that fish eat, so they cannot clearly identify why fish are turning up with so much radiation. TEPCO further suggests the theory that the radioactive particles that were distributed into the mountains are slowly being washing down into rivers and eventually making their way to the seabed.
