Well, it seems it's still hotter than a single male on SLS. Read more: On Wednesday, a new videoscope of the basement of the crippled reactor 1 at the Fukushima Dai'chi Nuclear power plant showed disturbingly high levels of radiation. Japanese engineers inserted a camera trough the canalization system into the basement. Just above the radioactive waters, the engineers measured an alarming high level of 10300 milisieverts/hours. In this environment, means a Japanese nuclear power plant worker would reach his year limit within 15 to 20 seconds. 20 to 30 minutes would be enough to render a perfectly healthy adult very sick. Symptoms of acute radiation sickness would appear resulting in death by heart or multiple organ failure. Tepco announced yesterday that the other accidented units 2 and 3 don't show such a high level of radiation. Nevertheless over 1 Sievert (1000milisievert/h) have been measured in outside these units. User Details are only visible to members.	Ghost: What are we to do? Nuke Japan?... Again? Short of physically taking over the plant, there isn't anything we can do. Even then, we would need to learn from the Japanese how bad things are. This is why strong government oversight is needed for nuclear power plants. The Japanese government is still trying to come to terms with what is and what isn't too much interference in people's lives. They do not wish to risk in the least bit a return to any society that would allow a rise of a military or authoritarian government. Because the Japanese social structure is to mind your own business and adapt to the junk someone else dumps on you, the people rarely hole the government accountable. This is why this kind if accident doesn't happen more often in the US and even when it does happen, it is more easially containable. Like chynobal, fukashima was a fluke allowed to happen by ignorance and a governments inability to hold people accountable, while providing the needed support to the company incharge of the plant.

If an accident should occur at the No. 4 reactor, it could be called the start of the ultimate catastrophe for the world.” I find it odd in the extreme that Americans would rather argue vehemently about political minutia, even threaten to secede but when faced with a clear and present danger like this can't even muster the strength or moral fortitude to even comment in a heated political thread when the topic comes up....

Speaking to Radio Australia, Buesseler pointed out that TEPCO is using millions of liters of water to cool the Fukushima reactors, and the fact that so much radiation is turning up in the ocean is proof that the utility is not able to contain it all once it has been contaminated. The Fisheries Agency has pointed out (probably to TEPCO’s disfavor) that even if the cesium particles were washing down from the mountains, it wouldn’t be enough to contaminate such a large number of species. Although their theory is just as absurd: that the cesium is gradually being absorbed into the seabed, and once that occurs, it’s not so easily absorbed/ingested by organisms. The results of Wood Hole’s study highlights the fact that it will be at least several decades before fish from off of Fukushima’s coast will be safe to catch and eat. The ocean, food chain, and Japan’s fishing industry have all been irreparably damaged by the Fukushima crisis, and that damage is still ongoing. The Japanese government and TEPCO’s excuses are only wasting time that should be put towards finding a solution.

TEPCO, Japanese government denying Fukushima radiation reaching ocean fish In what must the most dumbfounding state of denial seen in modern times, both the Japanese government and utility Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) are disputing the recent study that showed radiation from the Fukushima nuclear plant is leaking into the ocean. 18 months after the March 2011 nuclear disaster, the U.S.’s Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, a respected research group, reported that 40% of the fish caught off the coast of Fukushima were still testing positive for radioactive contamination above the government’s safety own limits. Scientist Ken Buesseler of Woods Hole stated that while it was expected to still find some levels of contamination, 40% was far too high of a measurement after a year and a half had passed. He said there are only two explanations for radiation remaining in the food chain like this: either there is a source of radioactive cesium somewhere on the seafloor, or it is being discharged into the sea by contaminated groundwater from the Fukushima plant. TEPCO and the Japanese government each deny one of the possibilities. The Fisheries Agency, operated by the government, says the contamination is sinking deeper into the seabed and therefore can’t be still entering the food chain. TEPCO, on the other hand, states there are no leaks of tainted ground water at the Fukushima nuclear site. A spokesman for the utility company says their studies of the seabed show low levels of contamination among the organisms that fish eat, so they cannot clearly identify why fish are turning up with so much radiation. TEPCO further suggests the theory that the radioactive particles that were distributed into the mountains are slowly being washing down into rivers and eventually making their way to the seabed.

Fukushima radiation in fish '100 times' above normal Radiation levels in fish caught near Japan's Fukushima nuclear power plant are 100 times above normal, media reports said. Japan's environment ministry carried out the tests in June-July this year in the Niida river to the north of the Fukushima plant, and also in the village of Iitate. The results showed that fish caught in waters in these areas contained levels of radioactive cesium 100 times above the government-set "safe" limits. The levels found ranged from 4,400 Becquerels per kg to 11,400 Bequerels per kg, against the maximum "safe" level of 100 Bequerels per kg. The Fukushima disaster was the worst in 25 years, since the Chernobyl accident in the then USSR. It came after Japan was hit by a powerful earthquake and tsunami in March 2011. It will take about 40 years to complete work to dismantle the reactor and clean up the area.

User Details are only visible to members.	Ghost: 1) While it is the worst nuclear disaster ever, the fact remains that this was caused by three factors. 1) Nature. (we now have designs for plants which are better able to give nature the bird. 2) Man made it worst than it ought to have been. Their culture was never one in which the people held their leaders accountable, but rather their leaders held themselves accountable. Sadly due to our business models and globalization... they no longer have leaders who do this. 3) Bad design, old age and really a government that failed to have the appropriate oversight over the company in charge of the plant. Had the Japanese government had the appropriate oversight, the workers in Fukushima would have ensured that the back up generators were properly maintained and prepared for the title wave. If the Earth quake had struck the plant directly, this would have been another story... But the only reason they lost control over the reactor was because they failed to protect the back up generators. (forget worker safety... in this case equipment safety should have taken priority.) Like it or not, the US will never achieve the solar power use that Europe enjoys... We do not have the indirect sunlight that Europe has, and as such we burn out the solar cells much quicker, in addition the direct sunlight that the US has, actually produces less electricity. Wind is a bandaid. While it will allow small communities to power themselves when they are built in areas that allow for wind turbines... Wind isn't always reliable as a primary source. Geothermal is not usable in all places, and is more ideal for home heating than power production. (although it might be an idea to place a million such stations in Yellowstone National Park to try and cool the super volcano which is about 20,000 years past its due date to erupt.) Cold Fusion isn't possible yet, so sorry science fiction fans... So nuclear is our only option for a less destructive power sources. Because of its dangers we tend to be more careful with it. From mining to storage. If we were to do away with the 1977 Carter executive order officially banning nuclear fuel reprocessing, we would be able to reduce the amount of nuclear waste stored. Fear of nuclear proliferation is childish at this point, our terrorist enemies have access to nukes, this is simply fact. Iran has already produced enough nuclear waste to cause a great deal of damage by handing the waste to the terrorist. (the real nuclear terror weapons are the waste, not the bomb.)

Fukushima 'running out of space' to store dirty water Thursday 25 October 2012 Japan's crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant is struggling to find space to store tens of thousands of tons of highly contaminated water, it emerged today. About 200,000 tons of radioactive water used to cool the broken reactors are being stored in hundreds of gigantic tanks built around the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant. Operator Tokyo Electric Power (Tepco) has already chopped down trees to make room for more tanks and predicts the volume will more than triple within three years. "Our land is limited and we could eventually run out of storage space," said water treatment manager Yuichi Okamura. Tepco's tanks are filling up mostly because leaks in reactor facilities are allowing ground water to pour in. Outside experts say that if contaminated water is released, there will be a lasting impact on the environment. And they fear that because of the reactor leaks and water flowing from one part of the plant to another, that may already be happening. Nuclear engineer Masashi Goto said the contaminated water build-up poses a long-term threat. He said that the radioactive water in the basements may already be getting into the underground water system, where it could reach far beyond the plant, possibly into the ocean or public water supplies. "You never know where it's leaking and once it's out you can't put it back," he said. He added that the Tepco roadmap for dealing with the problem was "wishful thinking." "The longer it takes, the more contaminated water they get."
