It costs more to employ and provide healthcare for people with disabilities, but it's still illegal to discriminate against the handicapped/disabled/physically challenged. You wouldn't support the same logic being applied to deny the handicapped work opportunities, would you? T

User Details are only visible to members.	Yeah, the hypocrisy is overflowing. I get it that many non-smokers don't want to be around smokers. Admittedly, I'm unhealthy to be around. Hell, I don't even like being around smokers unless I'm actually smoking. I just don't understand how anyone could be in favor of employers setting hiring or retention policies around the legal activities that people choose to engage in on their own time. This isn't a stance I'm taking because I'm a smoker, it's a stance I'm taking because I don't want my boss dictating what I can or can't do on the weekend. The claim that this is being done in the name of promoting healthier living and lowering insurance costs is ridiculous. It's no different than if pre-employment requirements included a weigh in and body fat measurement. Other than military or law enforcement, I can't think of too many other professions where weight or BMI are relevant. Once we've eliminated the smokers, the overweight and the drinkers from the job market, what's next? Pre-employment health screenings to look for any history of heart disease or cancer? Maybe a condition of employment will be that everyone practices safe sex or abstinence in order to avoid STD's and unplanned pregnancies. Will swingers be subjected to paying higher premiums because we are more "at risk" than those living in monogamous relationships, or will we simply be ineligible for employment because we happen to love fucking other people? T

User Details are only visible to members.	Party: Agreed. I am against banning the use of tobacco and alcohol, and the idea of decriminalizing some illegal drugs is becoming more appealing to me... But you will pay for that damage in way of the cost of your coverage. Yes, there comes a point where you won't be able to afford the higher prices and you will default to the tax payment plan. That is why I want the rich to realize that the only way they can stop socialism and communism, is to provide a living wage, compete to be the job which provides more, not less. Until that happens, the people will continue to turn to the government for help, drugs for an escape. Most people are weak, a society based upon only the strong is one which the strong become fewer and the weak lose their fear of the strong and the strong are forced out from their positions of power.

The least talked about dividend of Obama care is that contrary to what it's opponents claim, it will promote personal responsibility and accountability. These are things the right loves to talk about when it comes to others, but fail miserably when it comes to themselves. Responsibility will be rewarded, irresponsibly will cost you...as it should be

If smoking, is a cause of health issues and the hospital chooses not to employ any users, I guess you'll just have to go along with it. Yeah, I know you want every employee to take a breathilizer blow at their timeclock. You can always sue and make sure you have enough money for lawyers. So I guess if you're a health care professional you know the risks and I don't want you breathing or dieing on me when you take my blood presure.

User Details are only visible to members.	First off, I'm a smoker. It's a filthy, disgusting habit. But it's a legal, filthy, disgusting habit. I would rather see tobacco simply banned altogether than to have employers tell me that I can't enjoy a legal activity on my own time. I'm pretty sure that frequent and excessive alcohol consumption has a negative impact on your overall health but you don't see them telling employees to stop drinking at night or on the weekends, do you? You want ban smoking during the work day? Cool. You want to ban smoking on company property? Fine by me. You pay me from 9-5, you make the rules from 9-5. But screw anyone who wants to tell me what I can or can't do when I'm off the clock. A hospital local to me (Geisinger) implemented a similar practice last year, but they take it a step further by testing for nicotine during your pre-employment drug screening. This is from a job listing posted on their site: "Starting with job offers dated February 1, 2012 and after, Geisinger Health System will no longer hire applicants who use tobacco products, including cigarettes, cigars and chewing or smokeless tobacco. Applicants will be screened for nicotine as part of the pre-employment physical process. Nicotine will be part of the urine drug screen. Applicants who test positive for nicotine will not be offered employment. Applicants who test positive may re-apply for jobs with Geisinger in six months." So aside from the fact that they won't hire a smoker or tobacco chewer, apparently they won't even hire anyone who is on a nicotine supplement like the patch, gum, meds or e-cigarrettes, all of which supply your body with controlled doses of nicotine without all of the other harmful chemicals found in tobacco products. Not to mention that these quitting aids don't bring the unpleasant smell that comes from traditional tobacco use. I get it that smokers or chewers can have an unpleasant smell and that being around us isn't fun for most non-smokers. I try to be as courteous as possible around non-smokers. But unless tobacco itself is deemed illegal in this country, it just doesn't make a damn bit of sense to automatically disqualify tobacco users from employment opportunities. No one put a gun to my head to make me smoke. But no one makes fat people eat pizza instead of a salad and no one has ever been forced to drink excessive amounts of alcohol. If you're going to implement hiring standards based on "healthy living" then at least have the decency to be consistant across the board. T
