Washington (CNN) – With the stroke of a pen Thursday, President Barack Obama gave himself and his wife Secret Service protection for the rest of their lives.

The new law, which passed the House and Senate in December, designates that all former U.S. presidents who served after January 1, 1997, along with their spouses, receive protection from the Secret Service for their entire lifetimes – meaning former President George W. Bush and his wife Laura are also covered. The law also stipulates that children of presidents receive protection until the age of 16.

Lifetime government-provided security for former presidents was the law of the land until 1997, when Congress passed legislation limiting Secret Service protection to ten years after leaving office.

The 1997 law said any president serving before January 1, 1997 would still receive the lifelong protection. That means with the law signed Thursday, every former president – Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush – along with Obama will continue to receive Secret Service details for the rest of their lives.

"This is just the first step on a slippery slope. This means he can also sleep with your daughters, all of them at once, after the secret password is summoned. "

Now that is some funny shit!

Yeah, and we can't all drive around with sirens and flashing lights and ignore traffic signals, while police and emergency vehicles can. It's not fair.

The fact of the matter is that by his own order he will be protected by guns, and more specifically fully automatic weapons, for the rest of his life while he is trying to take our semi automatic weapons away from us.

Can we all say hypocrite. What he now gets free for the rest of his life he wants to take away from the rest of the good upstanding citizens of this nation.

It does not just affect Obama. And I would have cut it to 5 years, and they have to pay for at least part of the detail. The belt needs to be tightened and it should be tightened for the people in office before those paying the bills.

umm, until 1997 presidents got lifetime secret service protection. In 1997 it was changed to 10 years. The bill passed restores that to lifetime. Not exactly like this is unprecedented, but it is Obama so we must make a fuss!

ya, but that's what they've convinced so many to think about almost everything Gov't spends.

VA I am not bothered that they get protection, but if they can afford it, they should be paying for it. A little bit here, and a little there, ends up being a hell of a lot of money. You know or should know that a business making a budget usually means cutting a lot of small things.

They want more taxes from the rich, well let they pay their own way like anybody else. If school children don't warrant protection then ex presidents don't.

I think when one considers the money we waste on a lot of things, it's really not all that much. The number of living former Presidents is usually 3-5 and is unlikely to get a lot higher.

And I tend to agree with Robert. As much as you may or may not like a certain President, you likely don't want someone kidnapping them to extract sensitive information.

1) these men and women (when we vote a woman into office.) have some of our best kept secrets... Even after their service is complete, they still have what they learned and are a life time target for anyone wanting to know anything.

2) they have made a great many enemies on our behalf...

3) big deal, it is job security for someone. I won't begrudge them.
