User Details are only visible to members.	@FJ, if you were to administer a "state mandated" test that shows your overall level of education when compared to the national accepted standard, you wouldn't write it so that only a few (being the best and brightest...or in the case of my analogy, the Neurologist) would be the only ones to pass it, you'd write it so everyone (being the Janitor half of the analogy) can pass it. We don't care if you're smart, just so long as you meet a minimum standard. Until you reach a certain grade, that score doesn't even have a direct influence on your GPA, meaning, no matter how well you scored on that test, it means nothing to you other than you passed or failed, and even when you reach your sophmore year in HS, it holds no weight with how well you can take a test that IS designed to test your ability to remember and apply what you know (The SAT's). The "standard" it sets, based on how and what it is tested, is that average students are doing average-ly. If your school happens to "average" out better than others, you're given a letter grade A-F, and the funding to your school is either increased or decreased based on that score and that score ALONE. It turns teachers into proctors and forces them to give up valuable class time to teach a test instead of teaching at the level their students may be at.

" Please elaborate? Standardized tests set a standard, and check to see the standard is met. This has always been the case. Each class and subject has it's own standards and tests. If the students are being taught just to pass a standardized test the problem is not with the students or even bureaucracy, the problem is with the lazy teachers. Standard tests have been with us before I was in school, they were there in a catholic private school. All industry has some standards and tests to reflect those standards. In some cases there are things both a neurologist and a janitor must know. But some idiots think that they both should go through business guessing on what they are.

I don't know what schools have neurologists and janitors taking the same tests, but if it makes a valid judgment about the school, and a tentative appraisal of the teacher, it should be a good thing, yes? A local school system may decide they will be teaching "intelligent creation" or some such weird shit. Would that be preferable to what the nation's foremost educators believe is important and valid?

It’s the standards—not the FCAT—that make this possible. User Details are only visible to members.	Because a standardized test is given to many students, there is a valid correlation between each question and a student's total score. If it's a history test, and a question is: Who led the American League in home runs in 1964: Harmon Killebrew, Mickey Mantle, or Rocky Colavito -- there would be zero correlation between "correct on this question" and "high score on the test". This question would therefore receive very little weight on a student's score. If the question is "who succeeded Nixon as President: Carter, Rockefeller, or Ford", there might be a pretty high correlation between those who get this right and those who score highly on the whole test. It would get a higher weight in the scoring.

As a parent with 2 kids who currently take the FCAT and an ex-wife who is a teacher at their school, I can assure you that those scores are nothing more than a Pass/Fail to the kids, and are of much greater importance to the teachers and their school. Higher than average FCAT scores do not mean a student will score higher than average on their SAT's, which should be the case each and every time if it's to be believed that these tests do what they say they do.
