User Details are only visible to members.	Cplo: That is why education would have to be shoved down their throats... Likely destroying their culture at a faster pace. The only question becomes. In what manner does their culture die? Quick and remembered more fondly? Or slow and seen as the outdated trash we kept because we felt bad for what we did to them? It would be great if we could save their cultures, but I do not know how such a thing could be done.

Children born on reservations or who grow up on them are more likely to remain on them throughout their lives, much like anyone else born into poor, uneducated ghettos and trailer parks are likely to remain in the same/similar environment during adulthood. Most reservations are ghettos of sorts. There's a few tribes that have been able to capitalize off of their casinos and resorts and make their reservations "prosperous" but those are really the exceptions to the rule. Drugs, alcohol and a stong lack of emphasis on education plague most reservations just as they do with the poorest of neighborhoods in the rest of the country. T

User Details are only visible to members.	Well, there isn't much that can be done unless the natives allow the white dominated agencies to force edication and our ways down their throats... This of course will hasten the destruction of their culture... What little of it which remains. How so? Their kids will leave the resorvations for employment and a better life. These kids will likely mix the blood with others and pollute the gens until next to nothing remains. Further each next generation will teach their kids less and less of their old ways. It is text book, it all has happened to other cultures which couldn't win over, adapt and win or otherwise be the stronger culture. Granted sticks and stones couldn't do much against the industrial might of steel.

User Details are only visible to members.	Miss Cpl is Native American (Alaskan to be specific) and has spent much of her life on/around reservations and native culture. In fact, she was a Federal Majestic (aka Tribal Police) on a Kansas reservation for quite a few years. And yes, there's a major drug/alcohol problem on many reservations, especially the poorer reservations. This obviously leads to higher amounts of violence, especially domestic. T

User Details are only visible to members.	Wow, I'm embarrassed to admit that I am clueless on this one. I have a substantial amount of native american blood in me but I was not raised on or even close to any of the reservations so I do not have that cultural experience.

User Details are only visible to members.	In addition to domestic abuse, Native American women also experience the highest levels of sexual and domestic abuse of any group. A report from the American Indian Women’s Chemical Health Project found that three-fourths of Native American women have experienced some type of sexual assault in their lives. However, most remain silent due to cultural barriers, a high level of mistrust for white dominated agencies, fear of familial alienation, and a history of inactivity by state and tribal agencies to prosecute crimes committed against them. The Report on Violence Against Alaska Native Women in Anchorage, conducted by community agencies in Anchorage, Alaska, found a widespread fear and distrust for law enforcement. Nearly all of the women interviewed felt the system had "turned its back on them" and insisted that their rights had been systematically violated. The report documents an instance involving an Anchorage police officer and a Native Alaskan woman who had been held hostage and dragged across the lawn by an intimate partner. The officer ignored her report and proceeded to tell the woman to undress so he could look for bruises. "I was afraid they might lift up my clothing or maybe that they all would rape me . . . ," the woman said. " I was just terrified." The police falsely claimed the woman was drunk at the time of the incident despite a hospital report that refuted this. The woman's attacker was never convicted.

From the National Organization of Women: Native American Women and Violence Native American women experience the highest rate of violence of any group in the United States. A report released by the Department of Justice, American Indians and Crime, found that Native American women suffer violent crime at a rate three and a half times greater than the national average. National researchers estimate that this number is actually much higher than has been captured by statistics; according to the Department of Justice over 70% of sexual assaults are never reported. As women of color, Native Americans experience not only sexual violence, but also institutionalized racism. Alex Wilson, a researcher for the Native American group Indigenous Perspectives, found a high level of tension between law enforcement and Native American women, who report numerous encounters where the police treated the women as if they were not telling the truth. "In a reservation community,” Wilson said, "911 would dispatch police to a scene of domestic violence, but police would call the victim by cell phone and decide himself when or if he should go to the victim’s home. Often the women would wait for an hour and other times the abuser would answer when the police called, and would say everything was fine, and there was no need for them to come. Native women . . . who called police for help were often re-victimized by the police." Native American women also stand a high risk of losing their children in instances of physical and sexual abuse. The women often will stay with abusive husbands in order to keep their children. In one case, a woman was beaten by her husband so badly that he broke bones and she was forced to seek refuge in a domestic abuse shelter. The husband, through support of his tribe, was able to gain custody of their two children. He continued his violent behavior, at one point, throwing their two-year-old child across the room. The woman was never able to regain custody. Can you believe that?
