User Details are only visible to members.	VB, since you removed your 'provocative' post, can you remind us what the 5.8 per 100,000 referred to? Was it the rate of homicides by the mentally ill in the US? Were these people known to be mentally ill before committing homicide, or after?

Also above 5.8 homicides per 100,000 are Louisiana, Maryland, New Mexico, Mississippi, Nevada, Georgia, North and South Carolina, California, Arkansas, Michigan, Arizona, Missouri, Illinois, Tennessee, and Texas. If guns were removed from these states, residents would probably smuggle them in from other states. This is of course preposterous, and no one is seriously suggesting that. And so, the reason it doesn't happen is the same as for your suggestion.

User Details are only visible to members.	Well, we often hear in these forums and elsewhere about the inevitability of criminals acquiring guns. If they want them, they will get them. Yet you can't just wish for them or snap your fingers and get one. You have to get it from somewhere. How many of the guns used by criminals are gotten from legal gun owners, by sale or by theft? It appears to the casual observer that the gun manufacturers are selling mostly to white people, who are often selling (or losing) some of their guns to criminals, who then shoot mostly black people. Background checks and mental health records aren't going to fix any of this one bit. Strict purchasing regulations and even stricter non-transfer laws would seem to be in order.

I'm not denying that US whites have a higher homicide rate than comparable countries. I'm saying it's not nearly as different as one would expect, given our vastly higher access to guns.

Murders per 100,000 US 'White' 3.0 Finland 2.2 Czech Republic 1.7 Slovakia 1.5 Hungary 1.3 U.K. 1.2 Ireland 1.2 Poland 1.1 Sweden 1.0 Denmark 0.9 Norway 0.6 Iceland 0.3 Only 2 'white' countries in Northern and Eastern Europe have as much as 1/2 the US White murder rate. Obviously, clamping down on easy firearm accessibility would not end murder in the US. If it could be cut by half, that would be an amazing accomplishment of civilization.

Homicide (victim) for black people in the US is 17.3. Homicide (offender) for black people in the US is 15.6. The overall homicide rate is not nearly as different if one controls for demographics. The homicide rate for white people is only slightly higher in the rootin' tootin' US for white people than it is for the white people in overwhelmingly white peacenik-lovin' Finland. Why doesn't the US have a far higher murder rate among white people, given the widespread availability of guns? The murder rate among white people in the US is only slightly higher than that of white people in other developed countries. You'd think with all these guns, it would be much higher.
