The president rejected calls by some members of both parties for an increase in the federal gasoline tax to pay for repairing "structurally deficient" bridges. More than 70,000 of the nation's bridges are so rated, including the span that collapsed over the Mississippi River last Wednesday. Bush said Congress first must change its practice of letting lawmakers on key committees have a first crack at earmarking federal highway dollars before the balance is distributed to states.

Did they not say that they opted not to fix or replace the bridge but continue inspections? So it wasn't a matter of money it was a matter of poor decision making on the part of the local government and the inspectors. I have not heard of one guy who waved the red flag saying that this bridge was going to collapse. But that doesn't stop people against the war from finding a way to connect the dots back to Bush. This bridge would have collapse regardless of who was in the white house. Iraq does not factor into this tragedy at all. The facts of this specific case do not support your statements Red.
