TRIPOLI (Reuters) – Libya's unrest spread to the capital Tripoli on Sunday after scores of protesters were killed in the second city Benghazi, which appeared to have slipped out of control of forces loyal to strongman Muammar Gaddafi. Gaddafi has attempted to put down protests with a violent crackdown, triggering some of the worst bloodshed in the two months since unrest began sweeping across the Arab world. In the first sign of serious unrest in the capital, thousands of protesters clashed with supporters of Gadaffi in Tripoli. Gunfire could be heard and police using tear gas to disperse the demonstrators. In Benghazi, center of Libya's unrest, tens of thousands of people took to the streets and appeared to be in control of the city before security forces opened fire and killed scores. Benghazi residents said soldiers from a unit had joined their protest and defeated a force Gaddafi's elite guards. Bodies were brought to a hospital riddled with bullets and wounds from rocket-propelled grenades. A witness in Tripoli said police in the capital were using tear gas against protesters, some of whom were throwing stones at billboards of Gaddafi. A resident of the capital told Reuters by telephone he could hear gunshots in the streets. "We're inside the house and the lights are out. There are gunshots in the street," he said. "That's what I hear, gunshots and people. I can't go outside."

I boldly predict: The next time Al Qaeda or other terrorist bunch attacks, it will be somewhere with inadequate protection. Unarmed airline pilots, street vendors, diplomatic outpost, worshipers in a mosque/church/synagogue ... Then the zealots will cry about inadequate security. Not only is it inconceivable to fortify every possible place of attack, it's damned inappropriate. The world is not a police state.

Washington Post: "The Romney campaign may have misfired with its suggestion that statements by President Obama and U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice about the Benghazi attack last month weren't supported by intelligence... 'Talking points' prepared by the CIA on Sept. 15, the same day that Rice taped three television appearances, support her description of the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. Consulate as a reaction to Arab anger about an anti-Muslim video prepared in the United States." Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Times reports the assault "appears to have been an opportunistic attack rather than a long-planned operation, and intelligence agencies have found no evidence that it was ordered by Al Qaeda." This is going to be REALLY interesting seeing Robme try to weasel his way out of this fuckup. Too bad he doesn't have Candy Crowley to push around a little, I bet that would make him feel all kinds of better...

If you turn our embassies into forts, they must be supplied. The supply convoy's would come under attack and the forts isolated. As such, now you must go out and protect the otherwise unarmed supply convoy's... This quickly becomes a war, more so if the Libyan military decides to protect its civilians against the US military. Please do try and think about all aspects of what you want. Logistics is more important to anything you want done.
