I suspect that had Lott never wrapped his head around the idea that praising the segregationist aspects of the South (and the Dixiecrats did NOT break from the Dems over National Defense, taxes, or other issues - they did so over segregation) he wouldn't be back in the Republican leadership. This is as it should be.

Umm - I guess you missed this that I was responding to: "If Trent Lott would have said it they'd be calling for his head." I guess I could have ignored that, but it did seem to presume a lot. It was possible to praise Thurmonds legislative record and leadership in the Senate without invoking the glory of the segregationist Dixiecrats.

He said that his reference to the idea of the country's being better off was not about race and segregation but about Thurmond's support for "a strong national defense and economic development and balanced budgets and opportunity." User Details are only visible to members.	Tremendous political controversy ensued following remarks Lott made on December 5, 2002 at the 100th birthday party of Sen. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina. Thurmond ran for President of the United States in 1948 on the Dixiecrat (or States' Rights) ticket. Lott said: "I want to say this about my state: When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We're proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years, either." Since Thurmond had explicitly supported racial segregation in the presidential campaign to which Lott referred, this statement was widely interpreted to mean that Lott also supported racial segregation. Lott had attracted controversy before in issues relating to civil rights. As a Congressman, he voted against renewal of the Voting Rights Act, voted against the continuation of the Civil Rights Act and opposed the Martin Luther King Holiday. Lott also maintained an affiliation with the Council of Conservative Citizens, which is described as a hate group by the Anti-Defamation League and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. According to his uncle, former state Senator Arnie Watson, "Trent is an honorary member" of the CCC, a group the Southern Poverty Law Center calls "the incarnation of the infamous white Citizens Councils," the white supremacist groups that attempted to resist desegregation. Trent Lott said that America would have been better off if the Dixiecrats - whose main reason for breaking with the Democrats was over the issue of segregation - had won the White House. I'm not black, but I suspect if I were I'd be annoyed by being patronized, but really upset about tributes to the glory of government enforced segregation.

Joe Biden (D-DuPont) is just showing once more why he should quit trying to run on the national stage, and go back to doing what he does best - work for protecting corporate interests in every trade bill, tax bill, and finance bill. The man has shot so many holes in his own feet over the years that I'm surprised he can still stand. Then again, I've never heard him openly say America would be better off had segregationists been kept in power, so I'll give him a step over Lott.
