Does that mean the unemployment rate should be even lower? " It means the market is going through a cycle, it is caused by trading, many people make a living borrowing money and playing the market. Same thing happened in 1929, and it has happened since. It only takes a small event, followed by a sell off. The market is not a good indication things are rosy. The trick is knowing how high it will go before selling off. And knowing how low it will go before buying. And not buying on margin. Stocks go up because of demand, that demand can be controlled by many factors. Such as a late night host making a joke about toilet paper. Or a daytime host stirring a mad cow panic. When things hit bottom or close to it, people buy, when people buy the market goes up, until it cannot go higher, or a country goes broke, a unexpected war. Considering the debt here and in other countries the market will crash again, no matter who is elected. But of course it will all be GWB's fault.

The idea that they would all participate in a conspiracy to cook the numbers is pretty laughable; the possibility that it could be done without someone immediately blowing the whistle is beyond belief.

Someone once said that the chances of being able to keep a secret is inversely proportional to the square of the number of people who know about it, and decays with a half life of about 6 months. In other words - can 2 people keep a secret - forever? Probably. Can 6? Maybe for 6 months. Can 200 for 10 years? Impossible. This is part of the reason why I don't buy into 9/11 conspiracy theories. I just can't believe that such a thing could be kept under wraps by the sheer number of people who would have had to have known about it for so long. Someone would have leaked something by now.
