John Edwards is proposing health care for EVERYONE! What is it going to cost and how does he plan to pay for his plan? your thoughts on the subject and is SSI DOA if he gets his way?

At first Bush resisted it - but then someone got the idea of stripping civil service protections for DHS workers, and he embraced it. Can't pass up any good opportunity to hire more political operatives on the federal payroll!

Then when you think no more clowns could possibly come out, one more does. DHS is a Bush invention, it's out of control and it needs to be done away with. " No - you just have to present where you're cutting spending, how much, and evaluate what the societal and economic consequences would be. The "money lost" during the stock market turndown was funny money to begin with - and we're potentially facing the same situation today with housing, except that if housing prices start dropping after a bubble it has a much more severe multplicative impact throughout the economy. But there's not that much money to be saved, particularly if you're comparing line items to the military budget, unless you just take out the broadsword and eliminate Medicaid and Medicare, and default on Social Security obligations. Good luck with that.

There's the responsible question. The biggest flaw with Bushenomics, imo, was that it killed the best tool that we had for controlling spending. A budget that was balanced, or pretty damn close to balanced. When the budget is balanced, if someone says "I want to spend $10 billion more on this" - people say "where is the $10 billion going to come from?" When Bush cut taxes, and the deficit jumped to hundreds of billions a year, you have the current situation - the attitude in Congress becomes "it's just another $10 billion ... who cares if the deficit next year is $286 billion or $296 billion?" Personally, I don't think that this was an unintended consequence. There are a lot of government contractors who have made amazing revenues over the last 6 years - a lot of it with really bad accountability. That money would have been watched a lot closer had it been the difference between a balanced budget or a deficit.

I'd argue that welfare has been instrumental in allowing the Fed to keep inflation under control. The Fed has pretty much managed the money supply since Greenspan took over by targeting somewhere around 4% unemployment - driving interest rates up with the unemployment rate dropped much below that, pushing them way down when they wanted to heat up the economy. That's one big reason why real working class wages have stagnated so much over the last couple decades - the Fed has run monetary policy to guarantee slack in the workforce and keep it a buyers market for unskilled labor. What happens if you stopped welfare completely? All those people who are out of work due to fiscal policy would start getting hungry, and large masses of hungry people make for a very dangerous situation for those of us who do have money.

Eisenhower's Presidency occurred further back than I remembered! And yeah, the US has largely been running an economy based on using the infrastructure built and paid for by our grandparents .... and letting it degrade so that our grandkids will have to pay for it. But it allows for tax cuts!

" Right - because the private sector provided this country with rural electrification, the Hoover Dam, the Tennesee Valley Authority, The Bonneville Power Authority, the Panama Canal, and the interstate highway system - all of which were instrumental in the expansion of the US economy.
