New York State (D-Booklyn) Sen. Carl Kruger says three pedestrians in his Brooklyn district have been killed since September upon stepping into traffic while distracted by an electronic device. In one case bystanders screamed "watch out" to no avail. Kruger says he will introduce legislation on Wednesday to ban the use of gadgets such as Blackberry devices and video games while crossing the street. "Government has an obligation to protect its citizenry," Kruger said in a telephone interview from Albany, the state capital. "This electronic gadgetry is reaching the point where it's becoming not only endemic but it's creating an atmosphere where we have a major public safety crisis at hand." Tech-consuming New Yorkers trudge to work on sidewalks and subways like an army of drones, appearing to talk to themselves on wireless devices or swaying to seemingly silent tunes. "I'm not trying to intrude on that," Kruger said. "But what's happening is when they're tuning into their iPod or Blackberry or cell phone or video game, they're walking into speeding buses and moving automobiles. It's becoming a nationwide problem."

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New Yorkers who blithely cross the street listening to an iPod or talking on a cell phone could soon face a $100 fine.

New York State (D-Booklyn) Sen. Carl Kruger says three pedestrians in his Brooklyn district have been killed since September upon stepping into traffic while distracted by an electronic device. In one case bystanders screamed "watch out" to no avail.

Well, to be fair, the working poor people still pay sales tax, they still pay property tax - either directly or through their rent payments, they still pay gasoline tax, they still pay social security, which keeps the deficit from being twice the size it's repoted as. But when it comes to income taxes, it's squeezing blood from a rock. On one hand, we want the working poor to be able to save money so the government doesn't have to provide as big a safety net. On the other, people bitch that the guy making $8 an hour hardly pays any income taxes. Well, guess what - you make him pay income taxes and he's now below the poverty threshold. You could double my income taxes - and I pay more in taxes than someone working 40 hours a week at minimum wage earns in a year - and they wouldn't affect my standard of living one whit.

If we're paying for it - we might as well regulate and manage and control what we're paying for. "Federal mandate requires that all be treated at emergency rooms regardless if they have health insurance." I think the system has to work that way, for a lot of reasons. "Before I would support ANY plan regarding National Health Insurance, I would demand that Hospitals be stripped of their Non Profit status and removed from ANY connections to religious institutions. The ideas of Churches OWNING hospitals is idiotic." I'm largely with you there - I can understand a Church owning a hospital, but I don't think the Non-profit status should extend to the hospital. Same, btw, with the bookstores, restaurants, theaters, health clubs, day care centers, etc that are currently being run by the mega-churches - tax exempt status gives them a HUGE advantage over people trying to provide the same services in the free market, paying taxes. "All health care would revolve around PERSONAL RESPONSIBLITY...if you smoke...do drugs...drink too much...are obese...then your insurance premium would penalize you for such." One funny thing - by killing themselves off earlier, despite the medical cost smokers end up saving society money, since they fail to collect on as much social security as all us saints who don't smoke or use drugs, drink in moderation (good for the heart!), exercise regularly, and use condoms when playing ;-) "It would also reward those that take care of themselves. I would NEVER support a National Health Care policy where the individual does not pay something out of their own pockets." I'd be in favor of a tiered system, where certain basic needs are covered for free (child health care, regular checkups, emergency treatment), while there are premium services (orthopedic, a lot of high end prescription drugs, etc) that you could buy into with a higher premium. "This isn't a free ride for anyone...regardless of income." My biggest problem with the current system is that the people who really get screwed are the working poor. If you're unemployed, you're on medicaid. If you're like me, you have a company providing healthcare. If you're making $8 an hour and living in a city where a safe apartment costs $600/month, insurance is a luxury that might keep you from being able to save up for the car to replace your junker that's about to fall apart, or for a college fund, or for retirement. And Bush's tax credits do absolutely NOTHING for those people.

I know it's an uphill road - but the push-back is going to be coming more and more from manufacturers and other businesses who have been in the insurance business, and want to get out. And they can't afford a non-insured workforce. Who would that be? Insurence companies are the reason arent they? for unaffordible premiums arent they? And they dont give a shit about their employees if they did they would give insurence away instead of Min. wage increases.
