The low income people pay no income tax, in fact if they have kids they get money. The tax system is unfair and too high, at least Bush reduced it some. Now the Lib's want to raise it beyond what it was..DO NOT elect these socialist people! If your tax bill increases send the overage to pete he will gladly pay them for you...

Pete,

Because we are taxed to much that's why. The tax codes force us to be dishonest. I refuse to pay what they say i should. It costs less to hire a good accountant. I save ever reciept from every dinner i make sure i talk business with my wife or someone when we're out even to a club. It becomes a business expense. every hotel reciept even if it's for vacation. I shouldn't have to pay 30% of my income to the govt..... no one should have to pay more than 15% fed, state and local.

DEst

Under you're statement why should any of us work at all, even a penney because we pay a tax. So why should I earn say 60,000 a year pay my taxes? Because I get to keep the part that's left over to pay my bills and have a little fun. So who's the dumbass when you'd rather not have the money in order to save the taxes. You're just too fuckin funny. LOL

Tbr is right on the mark about college. The sad truth is that the College industry has perpetuated the myth that YOU could not possibly be educated enough nor responsible enough to hold any position of responsibility without a degree.

Since well more than half the people I went to college with have all the common sense of a rock this sort of indoctrination sticks like glue. Human resource people are the worst offenders. There is nothing I find more offensive than being interviewed for a position by a person who has less qualifications than I do (as well you should be also).

Think of it this way (if you've been in college). Remember the people who only came to class half of the time, were hung over most of the time, and tried to "catch up" on their work the night before it was due? Many of these people seemed to manage to barely pass and eventually get their diploma. Most of these slackers bring their lazy ass, sub-quality approach to responsibility to work with them.

Now, how about the kid you knew in high school who always did well academically and showed up on time. He or she has a job and a family, but because of life's circumstances didn't get to go to college. They work hard and have ambition but none of the hungover 2.0 preppys in management want to give them a break because they don't have a degree.

You may just callously chalk this up to "life's breaks" but who would you rather be running departments you want to succeed. Phi Crappa Zappa boy or a person with real drive and ambition?

OK Major, I will agree for the most part.

I think it is a tragedy that we push all of our children to go to college. Not everyone is ready, or has the aptitude, or the desire, to go to college.

I am very highly educated. I did my master's and part of a doctorate (long story) at one of the top universities in the nation.

My wife got her GED and did an apprenticeship. She is a journeyman painter and does pretty well for herself.

All legal work is honest work.

Is the average Joe better off? In some things no, in others yes.

If the average Joe has just graduated HS and is looking for a good paying job, good luck. Good paying jobs on just a HS diploma left this country many years ago. He'll need further education in the form of college, trade school, or military service. He'll need to choose his post HS education carefully so it does not fall victim to foreign outsourcing or have his job snatched out from under him by an illegal.

Today's recent grad does not have a background in the common culture that Americans once shared. He'll know very little about how our country was formed, or the historical events that lead to the concepts of republican government. He will not have read the works of literature that have shaped Western Civilization.

However, in the name of "self esteem" he has been told that he can do anything. That would include going to college, even if Joe Average is not college material. Our public education system does a very poor job of vocational training. Our country still needs auto mechanics, dental technicians, plumbers, welders, surveyors, and carpenters. These are skills that could be taught at HS level, but little effort is made to improve vocational school. All effort is focused on improving standardized tests.

Our current culture does not value education, particularly for young men.

Doom and gloom aside, our basic standards of living have never been better. Anyone on this site over the age of 35 can remember when most households had only one television. The average car did not have air conditioning, power windows, or leather seats. Most houses did not have dishwashers or central air or even more than one bathroom. I dare anyone to try and build a new home home without two baths, central air, a dishwasher or not have it wired for the latest in telecommunications. They'll never sell it. Likewise any auto mfr. whotries to sell a car with only an AM radio, no air conditioner, and vinyl seats will be laughed at.

Average Joe can surround himself with the latest in gadgetry, he can talk to anyone in the world for nearly no cost. He no longer needs to rely on old school media for his information. It is much easier to form his own opinions now.

American minorities are finally feeling true emancipation. They can succeed or fail based on their own merits, not on the color of their skin. They can determine their own future.

Like any other time in history, it is the best of times and the worst of times simultaneously.
